Funeral services for Mrs. Vilas (Hazel M.) Richardt, age 84, of Watertown, SD will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2007 in the Ortley Free Lutheran Church, Ortley, SD. Rev. Michael Peterson will officiate. Hazel passed away on June 27, 2007 in a care center in Watertown, SD. Burial will be in the Ortley Cemetery, Ortley, SD. Pallbearers will be: Gene Anderson, Dennis Aker, Ron Aker, Clifford Aker, Gordon Berwald, and Roger Aker. Music will be provided by Carol Goble, organist and Shirley Swanson, soloist. Visitation will be in the Crawford Funeral Chapel, Watertown, SD on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday preceding services at the church. The family is requested to meet at the church on Saturday by 9:30 a.m. for a prayer service. Hazel was born on August 30, 1922 in Stutsman County near Woodworth, ND to Fred “Ben” and Edna (French) Johnson. When Hazel was six, the family moved to South Dakota. She attended grade school in Ortley and high school in Summit, SD, graduating in 1941. Hazel obtained her teacher’s certificate and taught rural school for two years. She later attended Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD. Hazel married Vilas Richardt on November 15, 1944 at Waubay, SD. Following marriage, the couple farmed on the Richardt family farm near Summit, SD until moving to Watertown, SD in 1980. Hazel managed an apartment building for one year and worked for Sioux Valley Greenhouse and Floral for fifteen years. She was a member of Ortley Free Lutheran Church where she was the treasurer for many years. Hazel also was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary, was a clerk on the school board and election boards. She was a former member of the High Hope Extension Club where she served as an officer at the State level. She enjoyed music, reading, cooking, baking, and watching the Minnesota Twins on TV. Hazel thoroughly enjoyed helping people and her family was most important to her. Hazel is survived by her husband, Vilas; a daughter, June and her husband, Philip Burke; her mother, Edna Johnson, all of Watertown, SD; three grandchildren: Kevin Bartelt and his fiancée, Maureen West, Tyler Richardt, and Dennis and his wife, Karen Bartelt; and one great-grandson, Ryan Bartelt. She was preceded in death by her father and one sister.
