Funeral services for Vilas H. Richardt, age 84, of Watertown, SD will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 31, 2007 in the Ortley Free Lutheran Church, Ortley, SD. Rev. Michael Peterson will officiate. Vilas passed away on Friday, July 27, 2007 in a care center in Watertown. Burial will be in the Ortley Cemetery, Ortley, SD. Pallbearers will be Neil Holscher, Gene Anderson, Jim Kranhold, Cliff Benson, Dennis Aker and Rick Struss. Music for the service will be provided by Carol Goble, organist and Shirley Swanson, soloist. Visitation will be in the Crawford Funeral Chapel, Watertown, SD on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday prior to services at the church. The family is requested to meet at the church on Tuesday by 10:00 a.m. for a prayer service. Vilas was born on June 27, 1923 on the Richardt family farm northwest of Summit, SD to Frank and Louise (Frankenstein) Richardt. The youngest of seven children, Vilas attended Alto Township country school. He started farming at an early age, helping his father with his custom thrashing crew. On November 15, 1944, Vilas married Hazel Johnson at Waubay, SD. Following their marriage, the couple purchased the family farm and continued to farm together for 37 years. Vilas had to take early retirement because of his health. They moved to Watertown and managed an apartment building for one year and he also worked for Sioux Valley Greenhouse for 15 years. He was a charter member of Ortley Free Lutheran Church. Vilas enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing cards and watching baseball, especially the Twins. He was always there with advice and support for his family and friends. Vilas is survived by one daughter, June, and her husband, Philip Burke, of Watertown, SD; three grandsons: Kevin Bartelt and his fiancé, Maureen West; Tyler Richardt; and Dennis and his wife, Karen Bartelt; one great grandson, Ryan Bartelt, and his mother-in-law, Edna Johnson, of Watertown, SD. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel, on June 27, 2007; his parents; four brothers and two sisters.
