Hazel L. Hoverstadt Funeral services for Hazel Lillian Hoverstadt, age 73, of Florence, SD will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 30, 2007 in the New Helgen Lutheran Church, Florence. The family is requested to meet at the church on Thursday by 10:00 a.m. for a prayer service. Rev. Gary Anderson will officiate. Hazel passed away on August 26, 2007 at a hospital in Watertown, SD.

Burial will be in the New Helgen Cemetery, rural Florence, Florence, SD. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Hazel’s grandchildren. Music will be provided by Dorothy Anderson, organist, and Lorraine Meland, soloist.

Hazel was born on November 1, 1933 in Crawford Co., IA near Deloit, IA to Peter A. and Lillian (Busskohl) Mumm. She attended school in Denison, IA and moved to a farm near Florence, SD in March of 1949. She finished her schooling at Hillsdale School in rural Florence.

Hazel married Albert Joseph Hoverstadt, Jr. on January 27, 1954 at Watertown, SD. Due to Albert’s work, they lived in various towns and then made their permanent home in Waubay, SD in 1961. She won the state volunteer of the year for Head Start in 1976 and also a trip to their National Convention. Hazel worked at various part-time jobs while living in Waubay. She and her husband moved to Florence, SD following their retirement.

Hazel was active in the New Helgen Church Circle. She was also involved in the Florence Golden Years Club, in which she held offices. Hazel enjoyed playing pinochle every Thursday night at the Community Center. She also did “fancy work” (crocheting and knitting) and enjoyed keeping up a large vegetable and flower garden.

Hazel is survived by her husband, Albert of Florence, SD; her children: Rosemary Hoverstadt of Florence, SD, Darlene and her husband, Charles Zirbel, of Florence, SD, Mary and her husband, Merle Lewandowski, of Vienna, SD, Michael Hoverstadt of Florence, SD, Russell and his wife, Vickie Hoverstadt, of Florence, SD, and Darrell and his wife, Jolene Hoverstadt, of Mobridge, SD; one brother, Ronald and his wife, Janice Mumm, of Watertown, SD; five grandchildren, and three step grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one son-in-law, Jade Boettcher.
