Funeral services for Edna A. Orthaus, age 92, of Florence, SD will be at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 14, 2008 in the New Helgen Lutheran Church, Florence, SD. Rev. Gary Anderson will officiate. Edna passed away on January 10, 2008 at a care center in Watertown, SD. She was the widow of Jerome Orthaus. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Watertown, SD. Active pallbearers will be grandchildren: Chad Orthaus, Ryan Rogge, Ray Hjermstad, David Orthaus, Casey Orthaus, Matthew Hlavacek, Darin Rislov, and Tina Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be the rest of Edna’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Music will be provided by Sue Flisrand, organist, and Paula Orthaus and Lisa Sherman, soloists. Visitation will be in the Crawford Funeral Chapel, Watertown, SD on Sunday from 4-7 p.m. and Monday preceding services at the church. The family is requested to meet at the church on Monday by 12:15 p.m. for a prayer service. Edna was born on August 19, 1915 in rural Florence, SD to George and Helen (Lauseng) Sumner. She attended school in Florence all twelve years and graduated from Florence High School in 1935. Edna kept house for her dad and brothers and helped on the family farm until her marriage. She married Jerome Orthaus on October 24, 1939 in Florence, SD. Following marriage, the couple lived on a farm west of Florence. They moved to Florence for a short time and operated the Red Owl Grocery. They returned to the farm in 1951 and lived there until retiring. The couple moved to Lake Kampeska in 1975 and back into Florence in 1984. Jerome passed away on May 4, 1997. Edna was a member of New Helgen Lutheran Church. When her children were young, Edna coached various sports. She played basketball against her daughters in mother-daughter games. Edna enjoyed going to Texas in the winters. She also enjoyed gardening, flowers, baking, and playing pinochle. She is survived by three sons: David and his wife, Gloria Orthaus, of Goodwin, SD, Michael and his wife, Kathy Orthaus, of Marshall, MN, and John Orthaus of Brooklyn, MI; six daughters: Helen Ann and her husband, Keith Rogge, of Watertown, SD, Rita and her husband, Bob Lunde, of Florence, SD, Brenda Berg of Canton, SD, Rose and her husband, Larry Kahnke, of Florence, SD, Bonnie and her husband, Doug Rislov, of Florence, SD, and Nila and her husband, Steve Bath, of Florence, SD; four sisters-in-law, fifty-seven grandchildren, fifty great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome, her parents, seven brothers, two sisters, two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two sons-in-law, and one daughter-in-law.

Edna was born on August 19, 1915 in rural Florence, SD to George and Helen (Lauseng) Sumner. She attended school in Florence all twelve years and graduated from Florence High School in 1935. Edna kept house for her dad and brothers and helped on the family farm until her marriage.

She married Jerome Orthaus on October 24, 1939 in Florence, SD. Following marriage, the couple lived on a farm west of Florence. They moved to Florence for a short time and operated the Red Owl Grocery. They returned to the farm in 1951 and lived there until retiring. Edna was a member of New Helgen Lutheran Church. When her children were young, Edna coached various sports. She played basketball against her daughters in mother-daughter games. Edna enjoyed going to Texas in the winters. She also enjoyed gardening, flowers, baking, and playing pinochle.

Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome, her parents, seven brothers, two sisters, two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two sons-in-law, and one daughter-in-law.
