Funeral Mass for Loren B. Stein, age 84, of Watertown, SD will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at Holy Name Catholic Church, Watertown. Fr. John Lantsberger will officiate. Music will be provided by Donna Williams, organist and Becky Lubbers, song leader. Loren passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2008 at a care center in Watertown.
Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Watertown. Pallbearers will be Dr. John Stransky, Paul Hinderaker, Bob Schaefer and Merlin Jeitz. Visitation will be in the Crawford Funeral Chapel, Watertown, on Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. with a 5:30 p.m. Wake and Wednesday prior to services at the church. The family is requested to meet at the church on Wednesday by 9:30 a.m. to attend the services. Loren was born on September 25, 1923 near Watertown, SD to Louis and Netti (Schmeling) Stein on their homesteaded land. He was second generation Pomeranian and German. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1943, enlisted in the U.S. Merchant Marines and was stationed at Sheep’s Head Bay, NY in 1945. Loren was discharged as a Warrant Officer when the war ended in 1946, after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He lived through ‘World Wars’ and the ‘Great Depression’. Loren returned to Watertown to marry Joan Craney on August 8, 1946 at Watertown, SD and to this union, three children were born; Paul, Kathy and Richard. He entered the real estate and insurance business and established “Stein Agency” and retired in 1995. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church where he served on the financial board for many years. During his business career, Loren was active in the Jaycees, ‘Young Democrats’ and Real Estate Commission and earned the ‘Distinguished Service Award’ from the Chamber of Commerce. He was an avid golfer and hunter. West River legend has it that he was ‘more feathers than skin’ and could call geese and ducks from as far as Canada. He expressed his love for the land in the following words: “If you listen real close on a warm summer night, in the light of a full moon, you can hear the corn growing.” Loren is survived by his wife, Joan, of Watertown, SD; two sons: Paul Stein of Stony Brook, NY and Richard and his wife, Julie Stein, of Denver, CO; one son-in-law, Steve Horning, of Watertown, SD; two brothers: Clint Stein of Watertown, SD and Carroll and his wife, Donna Stein, of Minneapolis, MN; three grandchildren: Ted Horning and Austin and Rebecca Stein; and one great granddaughter, Isabella Horning. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathy Horning; his parents; and two brothers: Louis, Jr. and Clifford. |
