Jimmy "Jim" A. Carter

Jimmy Funeral services for Jimmy Allen Carter, age 78, of Roswell, NM, will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 27, 2009, in the Crawford Funeral Chapel, Watertown, SD. Jerry Simmons will officiate. Music will be provided by Carol Carter, organist, and Nicholas Galumbus, soloist. Jim went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 20, 2009, at a hospital in Roswell, NM.

Burial, with military graveside honors provided by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion, will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Watertown, SD. Honorary pallbearers will be: Jerry Simmons, Julie Oliver, Joshua Smith, Emily Smith, Christina Smith, Jeremy Carter, Kayla Carter, Jerusalem Carter, Michael Carter, and Adrion Simmons. Active pallbearers will be: Ole Olson, Jerome Olson, Reuben Olson, Nels Olson, Emmett Harty, and Tim Harty.

Visitation will be prior to services on Friday at the chapel. The family is requested to meet at the chapel on Friday by 12:30 p.m. to attend services.

Jim was born on August 20, 1930, at Hubbard Co., MN, to Woodford and Mabel (Ferdig) Carter. He joined the US Navy in Bismark, ND, on January 11, 1951, and separated from the Navy with an honorable discharge on October 21, 1954. His most significant duty assignment was on the USS Rushmore LSD 14. Jim bought property near Watertown and farmed for several years.

On August 9, 1958, Jim married Virginia Wohlwend of Harrold, SD. During their marriage, Jim and Virginia moved to Chicago where he graduated from Diesel Mechanic School. Jim worked for the postal service while in Chicago and then for Greyhound. They moved to South Dakota where Jim worked in a gold mine. From there, they moved to Montana and he worked in a saw mill. Jim moved to Seattle, Arkansas and finally New Mexico. He retired from the State of New Mexico as a boiler operator.

Jim was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, then the Church of God for many years. He accepted Christ while in the service and was baptized on March 5, 1951. Jim served in the local church as a Sunday school teacher until his early seventies.

Grateful for sharing his life and spiritual legacy are his two daughters: Virginia Renee (Casa) Oliver of Benton, AR, and Patti (Benny) Smith of Surprise, AZ; two sons: Jimmy Carter of Wasilla, AK, and Jon (Mindy) Carter of Roswell, NM; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers: Sam Carter of Rhode Island, Lyle Carter of Watertown, SD, and Jack (Carol) Carter of Grand Forks, ND; three sisters: Arlene Harty of Sioux Falls, SD, Joyce (Mernie) Olson of Langford, SD, and Janet (Paul) Needham of Moorhead, MN; one brother-in-law, Melvin Schmidt, of Willow Lake, SD; and one sister-in-law, Bess Carter, of St. Paul, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Leonard and Bob; two sisters: Edna and Violet; two half sisters: Helen and Cecil; and one half brother, Roy.
