Funeral services for Ruth E. Hedman, age 98, of Watertown, SD, formerly South Shore, SD, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 26, 2009, in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, South Shore. Rev. Jason Schmidt will officiate. Music will be provided by Hilda Grewing, as organist, with congregational singing. Ruth passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2009, at a care center in Watertown. She was the widow of Elmer Hedman. Burial will be in the Tabor Lutheran Cemetery, Strandburg, SD. Pallbearers will be: Leon Smith, David Smith, Elmer Smith, Fay Smith, Tim Streetar, and Doug Miller. Visitation will be in the Crawford Funeral Chapel, Watertown, on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday prior to services at the church. The family is requested to meet at the church on Thursday by 10:00 a.m. for a prayer service. Ruth was born on March 21, 1911, at Milbank, SD, to John O. and Christina (Holstein) Nelson. She attended high school in Austin Minnesota and graduated in 1929. Following graduation, she attended Northern State Teacher’s College for one year and then received her Associates Degree from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire. Ruth taught for 25 years. The first three years, she taught in rural school. Ruth married Elmer Hedman on July 21, 1936, at Tabor Lutheran Church in Strandburg, SD. Ruth taught the next four years at Stockholm, SD, and the remaining 18 years at South Shore. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. She enjoyed music and teaching children. Ruth is survived by her two children: David and his wife, Adrienne Hedman, of Stanchfield, MN, and Karen and her husband, George Smith, of South Sioux City, NE; seven grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

I'm very sorry to read that Ruth passed away last March. She was always our favorite teachers in South Shore School. I enjoyed our visits in the later years, especially when I would run into her visiting Elmer at the nursing home in Watertown. Ruth always had a wonderful smile and wonderful things to say! God Bless.
