Funeral services for Willis G. Moyer, age 77, of Watertown, SD, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2009, at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Watertown. Rev. Benjamin Radtke will officiate. Music will be provided by Rachel Wendler as organist with congregational singing. Willis passed away on Friday, July 10, 2009, at the hospital in Watertown.
Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Watertown. Military graveside honors will be provided by Frank H. Adams Post #750 of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Marine Corps League – Kampeska N.E. Detachment #1079, both of Watertown. Pallbearers will be: Roger Liljegren, Jim Henning, Greg Meyer, Lonnie Moyer, Gordon VanSickle, and Don Kluck. Visitation will be at Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Thursday prior to services at the church. The family is requested to meet at the church on Thursday by 10:00 a.m. for a prayer service. Willis was born on October 30, 1931, in Watertown, SD, to Harvey and Bertha (Belk) Moyer. He attended rural school north of Watertown. Following school, Willis was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps. He served from February 1952 to February 1954, during the Korean Conflict. Willis was honorably discharged, went on to heavy equipment school, and helped build Ellsworth Air Force Base. He then returned to live in rural Watertown. In 1955, Willis married Carol Elshere and in 1963, he married Patricia Resen, and they lived in Watertown. Willis worked in construction as a carpenter. He married Beverly Eggen in 2004. Willis was currently working at Watertown Park and Rec doing yard work and maintenance. He was a member of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church, the V.F.W., the Marine Corps League, and the ‘Devil Dogs.’ Willis enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, coin collecting, playing cards, and visiting with family and friends. Willis is survived by his wife, Beverly, of Watertown, three daughters: Jody (Tim) Conner of Mint Hill, NC, Melissa (John) Stassi of Madison, SD, and Kristine (Matt) Waldrop of Central Point, OR; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three step children: Lori (Roger) Liljegren of Estelline, SD, Leslie (Rick) Hanson of Watertown, SD, and David (Staci) Eggen of Longmont, CO; eight step grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; one brother, Eugene (Marlyce) Moyer of Watertown, SD; and four sisters: Hazel Bunde of Farmington, MN, Loverne Richter of Watertown, SD, Burnette (Ardell) Searcy of Milbank, SD, and Janice Waege of South Shore, SD. He was preceded in death by his first and second wives, one daughter, his parents, three brothers, and one sister. |
