Virginia M. Johnson Funeral services for Virginia Mae Johnson, age 87, of Aitkin, MN, formerly Hayti, SD, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2009, at Hayti Lutheran Church in Hayti. Rev. Randy Eisenbeisz will officiate. Music will be provided by Deanna Olsen, Bonita Johnson, and Judy Everson. Virginia passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2009, at the hospital in Aitkin. She was the widow of Davis Johnson.

Burial will be in West Norden Cemetery in Hayti. Honorary pallbearer is Clayton Shelsta. Active pallbearers will be: Eric Christensen, Andrew Holmes, Christopher McCargar, Neil Leiseth.

Visitation will be at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Thursday prior to services at the church. The family is requested to meet at the church on Thursday by 10:00 a.m. for a prayer service.

Virginia was born on April 28, 1922, on a farm near Hayti, SD, to Peter William and Pearl (Prouty) Erickson. She attended school in Hayti and graduated from Hayti High School.

On November 13, 1943, Virginia married Davis Johnson at Hayti, SD. Virginia and Davis lived briefly in California, during World War II, while waiting for Davis to deploy to the Philippine Islands. Virginia was a clerk in the Hayti Post Office for many years and she and Davis co-owned J & L Machines with Neil Leiseth until they sold the business to Neil. In 2002, they moved to Watertown, SD, and later to Minnesota.

She was active in the Hayti Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School, was a circle member, and sang in the choir.

Virginia is survived by one daughter, June (Roger) Olson, of Aitkin, MN; four grandchildren: Erik Christensen (Jeanne-Marie Price), Maren (Andrew) Holmes, Mari (Chris) McCargar, and Anitra Olson; six great-grandchildren: Monica and Noah Davis McCargar, Harris and Lenora Mae Christensen, and William and Penelope Holmes; one son-in-law, Tom Christensen, of Massachusetts; one sister, Ruby Buri, of Hayti, SD; one brother-in-law, Ronald Johnson, of Lemmon, SD; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Davis; one daughter, Sandra K. Christensen; three sisters: Blanch Jensen, Bessie Stolp, and Dorothy Torgrude; two brothers: Frank Erickson and De Forest Erickson; five brothers-in-law: Harold Johnson, Newton Buri, Ralph Stolp, Alfred Jensen, and Sam Torgrude; and four sisters-in-law: Ellen Johnson, Beverly Johnson, Elsie Erickson, and Helen Erickson.
