Funeral services for Charles C. “Chas” Schooley, age 77, of Castlewood, SD, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, in Grace Lutheran Church, Watertown, SD. Rev. Stephen Lauricella will officiate. Music will be provided by Marcia Jelsma, organist, and Judy Everson, soloist. Chas passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2009, at a hospital in Watertown, SD.
Burial, with military graveside honors provided by the Military Funeral Honors Team – S.D. National Guard, will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Watertown, SD. Honorary pallbearers will be Chas’ family and friends. Active pallbearers will be Chas’ nephews: Doug Schooley, Chad Schooley, James Hunter, Robert Kasten, Terry Kasten, Jerry Kasten, Danny Schooley, Tom Schooley, Brian Schooley, and Ted Schooley. Visitation will be in Crawford Funeral Chapel, Watertown, on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday in the church prior to the services. The family is requested to meet at the church on Tuesday by 10:00 a.m. for a prayer service. Chas was born on September 17, 1931, in Watertown, SD, to Clive and Meta (Helbing) Schooley. He attended rural school near Thomas, SD, and graduated in 1949 from Thomas High School. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1953. He returned home and farmed with his dad and brothers. On September 1, 1959, Chas married Dorothy Seppala in Lake Norden, SD. Chas continued to farm and later farmed on his own with his son Scott. Chas continued to farm until his death. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Castlewood; one son, Scott Schooley, also of Castlewood; two daughters: Beth (Bob) Holzwarth of Hazel, SD, and Kay (Mark) Ward of Watertown, SD; four grandchildren: Alex Holzwarth, and Molli, Madison, and Maci Ward; three brothers: Richard (Delores) Schooley of Aberdeen, SD, Jerald (Janice) Schooley of Nacogdoches, TX, and Kenneth (Karen) Schooley of Castlewood; two sisters: Virginia Kasten of Lake Norden, SD, and Dorothy (Kenneth) Hunter of Thomas, SD; and one sister-in-law, Edna Mae Schooley, of Denver, CO. Chas was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Glenn, Robert, and Donald; and one sister, Shirley Strait. |
