Funeral services for Barbara M. "Barb" Starr, age 73, of Watertown, SD, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2009, at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown. Rev. Stephen Lauricella will officiate. Music will be provided by Marcia Jelsma as organist and Judy Everson as soloist. Barb passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2009, at the V.A. Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. She was the widow of Lenard Starr. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown. Military graveside honors will be provided by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion and the Military Funeral Honors Team of the S.D. National Guard both of Watertown. Honorary pallbearers will be Ron Bohls and Barb’s American Legion Bingo Clan. Active pallbearers will be: Mike Starr, Bob Starr, Tanner Starr, Ron Starr, Michael Wendtland, Raymond Starr, Dean Walsh, and Dallas Starr. Visitation will be at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Thursday prior to services at the church. The family is requested to meet at the church on Thursday by 10:00 a.m. for a prayer service. Barb was born on October 23, 1935, at Watertown, SD, to Otto and Mamie (Surfass) Koch. She was raised by her father and step-mother, Lucille Koch. Barb graduated from Watertown High School and entered the U.S. Army in 1954. She was honorably discharged in 1955. On April 14, 1956, Barb married Lenard Starr at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown, SD. Barb started keeping record books for her husband’s service stations and also worked as a cook at The Inn, the Wheel Inn, and later retired from The Other Place in 1995. Barb prided herself on her baking and cooking. She enjoyed playing cards, Scrabble, and bingo. She also enjoyed camping and fishing. Barb loved the time she spent with her grandchildren. Barb is survived by six children: Lenard Starr, Jr., of Watertown, SD, Ron (Lynn) Starr of Wheatridge, CO, Mike Starr and his fiancé, Tami, of Onalaska, WI, Steve Starr of Colorado, Bob (Sherry) Starr of Watertown, SD, and Sarah Ulschmid of Watertown, SD; 13 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; three brothers: Delbert Koch and friend, Sharon, Dennis (Carol) Koch, Darrell Koch, and Doug Koch all of Watertown, SD; and three sisters: Bernice (Gene) Muller of Pleasant Grove, AR, Roslie Kiff of Yoncalla, OR, and Denise (Gene) Sotka of Watertown, SD. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lenard, in January 2009; her parents; her step-mother; and three brothers.
