Clarice was born on April 22, 1921, at Gentilly, MN, to Villa and Agnes (Corbin) Brule. She was raised on a farm and attended country school. Clarice was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church where she was baptized and confirmed. At age 15, she was in the Altar Society and Circle at church and was awarded a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary for all her devotion and attendance.

Clarice worked at St. Vincent’s Hospital where she met Leo Amiot. They married in St. Peter’s Church and lived in Crookston, MN, for many years. They moved to Moorhead, MN, where she worked at Ansgars Hospital. After several years, Clarice changed jobs and went to work at Newberry’s Department Store. In a short period of time, she became a department head and a supervisor. Leo passed away in 1966. Clarice retired and started her own business in her home arranging flowers and other decoration for weddings, anniversaries, and other special occasions. She designed the flowers and decorations for her children’s weddings. She married Howard Mather on February 2, 1968, at Immaculate Conception Church in Watertown. In 1993, after traveling back and forth to McAllen, TX, they moved to McAllen. Fourteen years later, they moved back to Watertown.

Clarice was best known as ‘Ma Mather’ to all family and friends. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and made a special effort to keep in contact with all of them. Clarice belonged to a bowling league for twenty-four years, enjoyed golfing, dancing, playing cards, gardening, fishing, ice and roller skating, and painting ceramics. She took pride in her flower garden. She also enjoyed crocheting, making afghans and doilies for her family and friends and made caps and scarves for all of the great-grandchildren. After Howard was elected District Governor of the Lions Club in 1972, the couple attended Lion Conventions all over the United States and Canada. She was also involved in many chili cook offs where her team won many awards. Clarice was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Watertown Lions Club, the Elk’s National Foundation, and a former member of the Catholic Daughters. She was also on the Election Board in Watertown for twenty-five years.

She is survived by her husband, Howard, of Watertown, SD; two sons: Duane (Mary) Amiot of Crow Lake, MN, and Darrel (Virginia) Amiot of Eden Prairie, MN; a step-son, John (Wendy) Mather, of Moorhead, MN; two step-daughters: Jean Kingren of Ramsey, MN, and Debbie (Nate) Larson of Grand Forks, ND; a step-son-in-law, Jim Ellingson, of Watertown, SD; thirteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Edith Brule, of Council Bluffs, IA.
