Funeral services for Leora “Orie” Palm, age 86, of Watertown, SD, formerly Wallace, SD will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 in the Crawford Funeral Chapel, Watertown. Pastor Ted Berkas will officiate. Music will be provided by Peggy Biswell, organist, and Leroy Mack, soloist. Orie passed away on Friday, September 25, 2009 at a care center in Watertown. She was the widow of Paul Palm. Burial will be in the Telemarken Cemetery, rural Wallace, SD. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Orie’s grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be: Jeff Elmore, Leroy Mack, Andy Mikkelsen, Dan Hanson, Derek Maas, and Leon Mack. Visitation will be in the Crawford Funeral Chapel on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue in the chapel on Tuesday prior to services. The family is requested to meet at the chapel on Tuesday by 10:00 a.m. for a prayer service. Orie was born on August 20, 1923, in Johnson, NE to John and Wilhelmina (Rademacher) Yelkin. She attended school in Newark and Britton, SD. Orie started working outside the home at twelve years of age as a hired girl. She met Paul Palm when they were both working for the same family. On September 27, 1941, Orie married Paul Palm in Moorhead, MN. The couple lived in Britton, SD for awhile and then moved to Wallace, SD in 1953. Orie worked as a bookkeeper in the creamery and later worked as a clerk in the U.S. Post Office; where she worked for many years. The couple lived in Wallace until they moved to Watertown, SD in 2001. Orie was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and a member of the Wallace School Board for several years. Orie enjoyed quilting, sewing, crocheting, and was a member of the Hobby Club. She also enjoyed being around people and visiting with them. Orie especially loved being with her grandchildren. Orie is survived by four children: Lyonne Hanson of Watertown, SD, Dolores (Gary) Maas of Zimmerman, MN, Paula (Leon) Mack of Watertown, SD, and Pat (Steve) Mikkelsen of Agar, SD; 18 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Dorothy Yelkin of Britton, SD. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; her parents; three brothers; and three sisters.
