Funeral services for Helen M. Bunde, age 92, of Watertown, SD, will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2009, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Watertown. Rev. Keith Petersen will officiate. Music will be provided by Bev Ewy as organist with congregational singing. Helen passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2009, at a care center in Watertown. She was the widow of Earl H. Bunde. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Helen’s granddaughters and great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be Helen’s grandsons: Bryan King, Brent King, Mark Redlin, Paul Heinze, Loren Sandberg, Kyle Redlin, and Ryan Heinze. Visitation will be on Saturday from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., prior to services at the church. The family is requested to meet at the church on Saturday by 1:30 p.m. for a prayer service. Memorials may be directed to Great Plains Lutheran High School or Prairie Lakes Hospice. Helen was born on July 24, 1917, in rural Watertown, SD, to August and Hilda (Giese) Strege. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Rauville, SD. Helen was raised on the family farm north of Watertown with her brother and sisters. She attended District Mayflower #23, a one room country school. On July 16, 1939, Helen married Earl Bunde at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Rauville, SD. The couple made their home on a farm north of Watertown where they lived and farmed for 50 years. Earl and Helen moved into Watertown in 1990. After St. John’s Lutheran Church closed in 2002, they became members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Watertown. She was a lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she was active in Ladies’ Circle and the church choir. Helen’s love for her family was evident throughout her life. After nearly 69 years of marriage, her husband, Earl, passed away on July 5, 2008. Helen is survived by two daughters: Audrae (Darryl) King of Mankato, MN, and Beverly (Glenn) Hasse of Eau Claire, WI; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Howard Strege, of Watertown, SD; one sister, Ione (Ray) Zechel, of Burlington, WI; one brother-in-law, Gilbert (Hazelle) Bunde, of Watertown, SD; one sister-in-law, Alice Moyer, of Estelline, SD; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Roger Earl; one daughter, Mary Ann; her parents; and one sister, Agnes.
