A Funeral Mass for Elmer L. Woolven, age 94, of Watertown, SD, will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 22, 2009, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Watertown. Fr. Joseph Forcelle will be the celebrant. Music will be provided by Leanne Giessinger as organist with the I.C. Church choir. Elmer passed away on Saturday, December 19, 2009, at his residence.
Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Watertown. Military graveside honors will be provided by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion, Watertown, and the Military Funeral Honors Team of the S.D. National Guard. Honorary pallbearers will be: Howard Gunderson, Donald Riley, Bernard Stoltenburg, Dr. Clark Likness, Sy Korbel and Dan Albertsen. Active pallbearers will be: Ron Caldwell, Brian Robinson, Tom Lohr, Mark Moorehouse, Stan Greenfield, and Joe Mack.
Visitation will be at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. followed by a 7:00 p.m. Scripture Wake service and will continue on Tuesday prior to services at the church. The family is requested to meet at the church on Tuesday by 9:30 a.m. for a prayer service.
Elmer was born on October 22, 1915, in Watertown, SD, to Henry and Laura (Olson) Woolven. He attended Watertown schools and then served in the U.S. Army.
On June 17, 1948, Elmer married Vera Rueschenberg in Watertown, SD. He worked as a custodian at Immaculate Conception Church; the U.S. Post Office, where he was employed for 20 years; and later worked part-time at the Watertown Middle School.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the American Legion, and the V.F.W. Elmer enjoyed hunting and collecting cars and trains. He loved spending time with family, especially with his two grandchildren. Elmer was very outgoing and loved to visit.
Elmer is survived by four children: Janeece (Ralph) Louiseau of Sioux Falls, SD, and Michele (Roger) Mack, Maurice Woolven, and Colleen Woolven all of Watertown, SD; and two grandchildren, Tammy Bauman and her special friend, Kevin, and Joseph Mack.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera; his parents; and one sister.
