Luella M. Rickard

     Funeral services for Luella M. Rickard, age 95, of Watertown, SD, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at First United Methodist Church in Watertown.  Rev. Dayne Zachrison will officiate.  Music will be provided by Dorothy Brugman as organist and Jan and Deverne Rickard as vocalists.  Luella passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at a care center in Watertown.  She was the widow of Robert Rickard.



     Burial will be at Antelope Valley Cemetery in Mazeppa Township, Grant County, SD.  Honorary pallbearers will be all of Luella’s grandchildren.  Active pallbearers will be Luella’s grandsons: Wayne Fish, Richard Fish, Alan Fish, Michael Burke, Chris Burke, Jerry Burke, Tim Kanthak, and Robert Kanthak.



     Visitation will be at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and Tuesday prior to services at the church.  The family is requested to meet at the church on Tuesday by 10:00 a.m. for a prayer service.



     Luella was born on March 7, 1914, in rural Twin Brooks, SD, to Chris and Rose (Hawkinson) Pederson.  She graduated from South Shore High School.



     On December 31, 1931, Luella married Robert Rickard at Milbank, SD.  The couple farmed together in the South Shore-Twin Brooks area and later purchased their own farm in that area in 1942.  They continued to farm until 1981 when they retired and moved into Watertown. Robert preceded her in death in 1992.  Luella continued to live in Watertown until living with her daughters this last year.



     She was a member of First United Methodist Church and Sr. Citizens.  Luella enjoyed gardening, reading, playing cards, and solving word-search puzzles.  She deeply loved her entire family and enjoyed spending time with them.



     Luella is survived by three children: Kay (Robert) Ward of Clark, SD, Donna (Duane) Fish of Twin Brooks, SD, and Jan (Terry) Jones of Plankinton, SD; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.



     She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Derold; one granddaughter; her parents; and one brother.

Our deepest sympathy to all the families.Aunt Luella was a most wonderfull person.As a kid growing up on the farm she done so much for me.All the great food she cooked just for me,asparagus that I gathered on the prairie my favorite and fresh geen pea soup on fresh baked bread. Though I met Luella Rickard (my Great Aunt) only a few times, I am sadened by her passing. I wish to convey my heartfelt sorrow to the entire family for your loss. I would simply say to everyone to remember the good times. This is what will keep you healthy and strong through the greif period. God Bless !

My sympathy to the family of Luella, As a Kid I remember when your folks moved into the neighborhood from the farm. Luella was always kind and always had a nice word and smile for everyone she stopped and visited with. May your memories and good times remain close to your heart.
