Donald L. Kannas

   Funeral services for Donald L. Kannas, age 89, of Watertown, SD, will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 12, 2010, at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Watertown. Rev. John Carter will officiate. Music will be provided by Rachel Wendler as organist with congregational singing. Donald passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2010, at his residence in Lake Alfred, FL.



     Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown. Military graveside honors will be provided by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion, Frank H. Adams Post #750 of Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Watertown, and the Military Funeral Honors Team of the S.D. Army National Guard. Pallbearers will be: Lee Peterson, Allan Spilde, Scott Dagel, David Lentz, Larin Bunde, and Donald Christenson. 



     Visitation will be at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Friday prior to services at the church. The family is requested to meet at the church on Friday by 10:30 a.m. for a prayer service.


     Donald was born on October 9, 1920, in South Shore, SD, to Herman and Mary (Steinocker) Kannas. He attended Germantown Township school. Donald enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the Southwest Pacific until January of 1946. 


     On February 11, 1946, Donald married Arlene Stein at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Watertown. The couple began farming north of Watertown that same year. Donald and Arlene enjoyed extensive traveling together including trips to Europe, Alaska, Mexico, Australia, and the Philippine Islands. Upon retirement in 1976, they moved to Watertown and spent all of their winters in Florida. 


     Donald was a member of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church where he was very active. He served on the Germantown Township school board for many years. He also served on the board of directors for ‘Sunset by the Lake’ retirement community in Lake Alfred, Florida. Donald was a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and visiting with friends. Donald was always the first to lend a helping hand and never met a stranger. He loved his family and will be greatly missed.


     Donald is survived by his wife, Arlene, of Watertown; one daughter, Linda Kannas Peterson, of Burlington, NC; and three grandchildren: Jennifer Peterson of Athens, GA, Allison Peterson of Swannanoa, NC, and Lee Peterson of Charlotte, NC.


     He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Levi and Clarence; and two sisters, Anneita Kannas and Lila Beskow.
