Duane was born on June 17, 1922, southeast of Webster, SD, to Walter and Lydia (Krueger) Schmidt. He attended grade school in Morton Township and graduated from Webster High School.  Following graduation, Duane attended welding school in Sand Lake, SD, and went on to work at a sheet metal shop in Green Bay, WI.  After a short time, Duane moved back home to help his dad on the farm.

On June 1, 1945, Duane married Elaine Bisgard at Waubay, SD.  The couple lived on the farm near Webster for 11 years and were blessed with five children.  Due to a farm injury, they sold the farm and moved to Watertown.  They eventually opened Duane’s Welding Shop which they operated for 25 years.  Duane retired in 1988.

Elaine and family, we share your loss, but in a much smaller way. We knew you and Duane through church and through his work with Energy Industries in developing unique tools and machines. He was an expert in design and structure and great to work with. Our prayers are with you.

I am so sorry to hear of Duane's passing. I am not able to be there with your family, but you all are in my thoughts and prayers. As I shared with a couple of my friends that Uncle Duane had passed away, when they asked me what I remembered about him, one word that always came up was "kind".

Love, Linda Buchko, Rapid City, SD
