     Funeral services for Richard D. “Dick” Engels, age 83, of Watertown, SD, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 20, 2011, at Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Watertown.  Rev. Roger Spahr will officiate.  Music will be provided by Lynn Osthus as organist with Dick’s granddaughter, Journey Green, as soloist.  Dick passed away on Sunday, January 16, 2011, at the hospital in Watertown.



     Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown.  Military graveside honors will be provided by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion of Watertown and the Military Funeral Honors Team of the SD Army National Guard.  Honorary pallbearers will be:  Vernon Petersen, Roger Green, Les Kampen, Dave Dahl, Cliff Akers, Norman Gusso, Doyle Stroschien, and Bill Chilson.  Active pallbearers will be:  Todd Jutting, Kevin Sprau, Brandon Davis, Chad Jutting, Kris Green, Tyler Kase, and Lonnie Davis.



     Visitation will be at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. and prior to services at the church on Thursday.  The family is requested to meet at the church on Thursday by 10:00 a.m. for a prayer service.



     Dick was born on October 31, 1927, on a farm near Bemis, SD, to Detert and Alberta (Lamfers) Engels.  Dick was baptized and confirmed at the Bemis Presbyterian Church. He attended Hillcrest District #62 school and farmed with his mom and brother.  Dick entered the US Army on February 21, 1951, serving during the Korean Conflict, and was honorably discharged on February 20, 1953. 



     On November 7, 1953, Dick married Violet Jutting at Gary, SD.  Dick worked with his brother hauling gravel. They moved to Watertown where Dick worked for Petroleum Carriers and then transferred to Wolsey in 1965.  The couple returned to Watertown in 1976 and Dick worked for Cenex until he retired in 1992.



     He was a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church and the American Legion.  Dick enjoyed hunting and fishing, camping, woodworking, and doing yard work.  He loved helping his two daughters on their farms and spending time with his grandchildren.



     Dick is survived by his wife, Violet, of Watertown, SD; two daughters: Patricia (Roger) Schuelke of Marietta, MN, and Michelle (Brian) Green of Wilmot, SD; four grandchildren: Cody Schuelke of Birmingham, AL, Nathaniel (Kaci) Schuelke of Loveland, CO, Journey Green and Richard Green both of Wilmot, SD; and three great-grandchildren.



     He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and six sisters.

Our sympathy to Vi and the Engels family in the loss of your husband, father and grandpa:

My sister lives next door to Vi & Dick and they are good neighbors to her.

May God grant you comfort and peace and family and friends provide you love and support in the days ahead. He will live on in your memories.
