Doris E. Flanigan

   Funeral services for Doris E. Flanigan, age 87, of Watertown, SD, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 7, 2011, at Watertown Wesleyan Church in Watertown, SD.  Pastor Jim Biswell will officiate.  Music will be provided by Peggy Biswell, organist, and Pastor Jim and Peggy Biswell, vocalists.  Doris passed away on Saturday, July 2, 2011, at the Watertown hospital.  She was the widow of Vernon Flanigan.



     Burial will be in Garden City Cemetery, Garden City, SD.  Honorary pallbearers will be all of Doris’ grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.  Active pallbearers will be:  Bob Derrick, Ron Urevig, Roger Steuck, Curt Knutson, Dale Knutson, and Blanch Flanigan. 



     Visitation will be at Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. and in the church on Thursday prior to the services.  The family is requested to meet at the church on Thursday by 10:00 a.m. for a prayer service.



     Doris was born on April 25, 1924, in Holland, MN to Paul and Josephine (Staben) Steuck.  She attended school in Watertown, SD. 



     On April 8, 1941, Doris married Vernon Flanigan in Watertown, SD.  The couple lived in Watertown, the Bradley area, and Garden City, SD.  Doris worked at the post office in Garden City from 1968 -1980.   Vernon passed away on July 9, 1979.  Doris continued to work at the post office and was Postmistress from 1980-1990 when she retired.  She lived in Garden City for three more years and then moved into Watertown. 



     Doris was a member of Watertown Wesleyan Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, the United Methodist Women, and the Royal Neighbors.  She actively participated in the weekly four generation Bible study.  She enjoyed playing cards, watching the Minnesota Twins, visiting with people at Jenkins Living Center, and attending grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities.  She truly loved being with her entire family.



     Grateful for having shared her life are her children:  Kay (Bob) Derrick of Arlington, SD, Vince (Blanch) Flanigan of Redfield, SD, Linda (Ron) Urevig of Watertown, SD, Jo (Roger) Steuck of Summit, SD, Doris Mae (Curt) Knutson and Jean (Dale) Knutson all of Volga, SD, and Cecile Kerby of Abilene, TX; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.



     Doris was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three grandchildren:  Greg Steuck, Carmela Toth, and Brody Kerby; one son-in-law, James Kerby; four brothers; and four sisters.

Jean and Family,rnrnYou and your family are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. We have lots of fond memories of your mom when she was at your house in Hartford. She was a great mom and grandma and will truly be missed.

I'm praying for all of you and I'll be coming back tomorrow so will be there for the viewing & service. Doris was one of Mom's best friends as you all well know. They are together now and will be able to visit and have fun with no pain.
I know she will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.

Please accept my sincere sympathy in the loss of your mother. She was a wonderful woman. The last time I saw her I believe was at Glenn's funeral. Just know that my thoughts and prayers go with you.

To the family of Doris, What a wonderful Mom you had. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her. I know Mom and Dad really looked forward to her visit when they lived in their house and at 200 Maple Place. My thoughts and Prayers are with you all at this very hard time. Remember all the good times.
