Funeral services for Vernette Mable Overby, age 87, of Watertown, SD, will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 30, 2011, at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown.  Joe Hobbs and Craig Winquist will officiate.  Music will be provided by Judy Vockrodt as organist with congregational singing.  Vernette passed away on Friday, August 26, 2011, at a care center in Watertown.  She was the widow of Byron Overby.

     Visitation will be at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. and prior to services at the chapel on Tuesday. 

     Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Binford Cemetery in Binford, ND.  A reception will follow the graveside service at the local fire hall. 

     Vernette was born on February 7, 1924, on the family farm near Wilmot, SD, to Victor and Amanda (Carlson) Ekman.  She was the youngest of four children. 

     On August 31, 1946, Vernette married Byron Overby and the couple lived in various places in North and South Dakota.  In September of 1967, they adopted a baby boy, Clarence. Vernette was known for her large gardens where she loved to spend time.

     Vernette is survived by her son, Clarence (Cathy) Overby, of Watertown, SD; four grandchildren: Ashley (Trent) Ammann, Alesha (Joe) Monnens, Amanda Overby, and Adam Overby; and three great-grandchildren: Andrew, Owen, and Bradley.

     She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and three brothers: Clarence, Harold, and Alvin.
