Janet L. Tapio

Janet Lilian Tapio, 70, of Watertown, SD passed away of an apparent heart attack on Wednesday, October 12, 2011.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Watertown.  Rev. Elmer Liimatta and Rev. Reino Maunu will officiate.  Music will be provided by Wanda Lau as organist with Brad Prouty as soloist.

Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown.  Pallbearers will be Janet’s nephews:  Glenn Prouty, Brian Prouty, Wade Prouty, Brad Prouty, Kyle Prouty, and Jay Prouty.

Visitation will be at Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Monday from 4-7 p.m. and in the church on Tuesday prior to the services.

Janet was born March 3, 1941, to Brace and Elsie (Yonker) Prouty in Hayti, SD.  She was the fourth of six children raised on a farm near Bryant, SD.  After graduation from Hayti High School in 1959, Janet worked in Minneapolis.  She met Edwin Tapio and they married on December 17, 1960, in Lake Norden, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Galen, her sister Dorthy, and a son David.

Janet is survived by her husband, Edwin; four sons, Douglas (Michelle) Tapio of Plymouth, MN, Daryl Tapio  of Seattle, WA, Neal Tapio of Minneapolis, MN, and Nathan (Elsa) Tapio of Parkston, SD;  two brothers, Glenn (Peggy) Prouty of Bryant, SD and Elton (Mary Jo) Prouty of Newell, SD; and  one sister, Arvilla Prouty of Bryant, SD.  Janet was blessed with nine grandchildren:  Ryan, Brandyn, Sarah, Tyler, Drew, Ashlyn, Josiah, Kahris, and Emelia.

Most important to Janet was her personal walk with Jesus Christ.  She was a member of Apostolic Lutheran Church in Watertown.  She was a loving wife and enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.  She was to the end a close confidant of those who had the joy to know her.  Her endless energy, optimism, and faith were an inspiration to her family, friends, and all those that met her.  Janet was a proud conservative and was an active member of the Republican Women of Codington County.  She enjoyed doing random acts of kindness and cherished volunteering with Jenkins Living Care Center.

Tapio family,

We live 2 doors down and always enjoyed seeing Jan's smiling face out walking and waving when she drove by. She was truly a genuinely nice and caring person. We will definitely miss her!

Our prayers and thoughts to your family.
