Harry Richard Horning, 86, passed away comfortably at the Estelline Nursing Home the morning of October 13, 2011. He was born August 18, 1925, to Ross and Harriet (Meaghan) Horning. He attended Immaculate Conception Grade School and graduated from Watertown High School. He attended college and graduated from the University of Minnesota. While attending college, Dick was on the debate team with Joe Robbie, the owner of the Miami Dolphins. Dick eventually worked for the Miami Dolphins as head Public Relations Director and later in sales for the Skyboxes of the Miami Dolphins Stadium. He had been the PR Director for the Los Angeles Lakers previously, but his true love was journalism. He started working for an Australian newspaper when he was nineteen years old and covered the Chinese Civil War for the paper from Karachi, Pakistan. He was a case officer for the OSS (Office of Special Services), the precursor of the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency), at the end of WWII. He was a former reporter for the St. Paul Pioneer Press newspaper and was a former TV news director for the WTCN in Minneapolis. He later worked for CBS news in China after sending his resume to Eric Severeid. Dick’s most enjoyable job was working for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner which, at one time, had the largest circulation of any newspaper in the world. While at the Herald Examiner, he won an Associated Press Award for the Western Division in his coverage of the aftermath of the Watts Riots. He interviewed many celebrities when in Los Angeles and his favorite was with George Burns. Dick was assigned to cover the campaign of Pat Brown when he was running against Ronald Reagan for the Governor of California. He was an avid golfer playing almost daily after retiring from the Miami Dolphins. Dick was very proud of his nine ‘holes-in-one’. The day of Hurricane Andrew in Miami, he sent a postcard to his nephew in Watertown stating, “Didn’t golf today, TOO WINDY”. He had a great sense of humor and his individualism, knowledge of world news and politics, and quick wit will be missed by his family. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: Joey, Jerome, Ross "Bumps", and James. He is survived by his brothers, William (Rita) Horning of Coos Bay, OR, and Jon (Terry) Horning of Willmar, MN; his sisters, Mary (Denny) Turtle of Mankato, MN, and Julie (Jerry) Richmond of Bradenton, FL; and many nephews and nieces. There will be a Memorial Service at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown, SD on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. |
