Mildred A. Stimson

Mildred A. Stimson, age 90, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Monday, December 26, 2011, at a care center in Watertown.  She was the widow of Forrest Stimson.  Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, December 30, 2011, at Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown.  Rev. Gary Westgard will officiate.  Music will be provided by A.J. Sherrill as organist and Robbyn Givens as soloist.

Burial will be in Prairie Hill Cemetery in Bradley, SD, at a later date.  Pallbearers will be Mildred’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. and on Friday prior to the services at the chapel.

Mildred was born on January 11, 1921, at Wallace, SD, to Oscar and Effie L. (Pardis) Markrud.  She attended school and graduated from Bradley High School.  Mildred then enrolled in Remily Beauty School in Aberdeen, SD.

On May 9, 1941, she married Forrest Stimson in Bunkie, LA.  Mildred lived in Wallace while her husband served during WWII.  Following his discharge, the couple moved to a farm in Sheridan Township where Mildred raised chickens and sold eggs for many years.  In her earlier years, Mildred enjoyed crocheting and always had the sewing machine ready to sew a seam or to sew a patch for her kids and grandkids.  The couple lived on the farm from the fall of 1945 until semi-retiring in 1981.  They continued living on the farm after their retirement.

Mildred was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she was involved in Circle, quilting, lefse making, and other activities in the church.  She was also a member of Appleby Extension Club and Foley Garden Club.  She enjoyed baking angel food cakes and never missed making one for everyone’s birthday.  Mildred also enjoyed walking, gardening and being with her family, especially the grandchildren.  She always had a cup of coffee ready to go with a fresh homemade cookie or brownie for anyone who stopped in.  For many years Mildred and Forrest enjoyed traveling to Texas and Florida.

Mildred is survived by her children: Janelle (Bob) Marx, Laurie (Ken) Larson, Roger (Karla) Stimson, and Jim (Kris Becking) Stimson, all of Watertown, SD; 12 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and one sister, Adeline Gulbraa.
