Wallace was born on September 26, 1924, on the family farm near Waubay, SD, to Emil and Alma (Holzerland) Hamman.  He attended Central Point country school and farmed with his parents on the family farm.

On October 25, 1949, Wallace married Evelyn Helwig at Waubay.  He continued to farm but also did some trucking.  Wallace started selling ‘AAL’ insurance in 1967. Due to Wallace’s committed drive and devotion to helping others with their insurance needs, he was awarded several distinguished achievement awards during his insurance career.  Evelyn passed away in 1985 and in 1992, Wallace retired and moved to Watertown.

Wallace married June Walter on January 15, 1994, at Watertown.  That year, he opened and operated the #1 Casino.  Wallace also sold headstones and monuments during his retirement.  June passed away in 2011.

He was a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Watertown and a former member of Zion Lutheran Church in Waubay.  He was also a member of the Senior Citizens’ Center.  Wallace enjoyed hunting with friends, relatives and his children in his younger years and thoroughly enjoyed card playing his whole life.

Wallace is survived by seven children: Jane (Roger) Skatvold of Watertown, Mary (Tom) Snyder of Montrose, CO, Wallace (Diane) Hamman of Milbank, Faye (Steven) Berkenpas of Adrian, MN, Ruby (Bert) Reissig of Colorado Springs, CO, Joan (Randy) Johnson of Pearl River, NY, and Allen (Jenny) Hamman of Sturgis; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Gene Hamman, of Livingston, MT.

He was preceded in death by his wives; his parents; three brothers: Alvin, Harold and Gerald; and one sister, Caroline Gaikowski.

I remember Wally as being a very energetic person. It seemed he was always on the go when he sold insurance. I remember him stopping by the farm many times. I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
