Clifford N. Hanten

Clifford Nicholas Hanten, age 86, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Thursday, April 12, 2012, at a local care center.  Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 16, 2012, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Watertown.  Fr. John Lantsberger will officiate.  Music will be provided by  Jane Rokusek, organist; Blaine Martian, song leader; and Pete Mack, soloist.



Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Watertown. Military graveside honors will be provided by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion, Watertown, and the Military Funeral Honors Team – SD Army National Guard.  Pallbearers will be Cliff’s grandchildren:  Richard Boettcher, Charles Boettcher, Brent Boettcher, Amanda Boettcher, Jennifer Diehl, Kimberly Wagner, Nicole White, and Joshua Wagner.



Visitation will be at Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. with a Scripture Wake Service at 4:30 p.m.  Visitation will continue on Monday at the church prior to the services.



Cliff was born on December 15, 1925, in Codington County, SD, to Mathew A. and Elizabeth (Mack) Hanten.  He attended District #12 rural school and Holy Rosary School.  After graduation, Cliff farmed until he entered the US Army during WWII.  After an honorable discharge, Cliff returned to the family farm. 



On June 22, 1949, Cliff married Delphine Endres at Immaculate Conception Church in Watertown.  The couple farmed and in 1955 purchased the farm.  They lived on the farm until 1987 when they moved into Watertown.  Cliff worked at Dynamic Engineering for fourteen years and then retired.



He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters, a lifetime member of 55 Plus Center, Elks, and American Legion.  Cliff volunteered at the 55 Plus Center and enjoyed traveling to Rome; Munich, Germany; Spain, the Holy Land, Greece and Hawaii.   He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and working as a handyman.



Cliff is survived by his wife, Delphine, of Watertown, SD; two daughters: Marian E. (Robert) Wagner of Columbia, SC, and Karyl Jean (Dick) Boettcher of Watertown, SD; eight grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and one brother, Leo (Ginger) Hanten, of Goodwin, SD.



He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Edward, Vernon “Bud”, and Matt, Jr.; and one sister, Margaret Moes.

It is with a heavy heart that I offer to you my condolences in the passing of Mr. Hanten. It is with a light heart that I reflect on how "neat" a guy he was and how he loved his family so deeply.
