James R. Jim Meroney

James R. “Jim” Meroney, age 79, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Saturday, June 30, 2012, at a care center in Watertown.  Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2012, at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown.  Rev. Sara Nelson will officiate.  Music will be provided by Lesa Dahl as organist with Jackie Wettestad as soloist.  There will be no visitation.


Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown.  Military graveside honors will be conducted by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion and Frank H. Adams Post #750 of the V.F.W., both of Watertown, and the Funeral Honors Team of the SD Army National Guard.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association. 

Jim was born on January 19, 1933, at Ligonier, IN, to Clarence and Erma (Damey) Meroney.  He graduated in 1951 from Albion High School in Albion, IN. Jim enlisted in the US Army in 1952 and served his country until his honorable discharge in 1955.


On August 25, 1956, Jim married R. Joan Hicks at Ligonier.  He graduated in 1959 from International College in Fort Wayne, IN, with a degree in Professional Accounting.  Jim worked as an accountant with Marathon Oil Co. from 1959 to 1965, Unlimited Glass from 1965 to 1968 and with the Internal Revenue Service from 1968 until his retirement in December of 1983.  He later started Meroney Tax Service in January of 1984 and owned and operated that business until August of 2000.


He was a member of First United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the V.F.W.  Jim enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing.


Jim is survived by his wife, Joan, of Watertown; one son, Jeff (Candis) Meroney, of Watertown, SD; one daughter, Jayne (Jay) Moore, of Keller, TX; three grandchildren: Amy, Daniel and Thomas Moore; one brother, Donald (Dorothy) Meroney, of Knoxville, TN; and one sister, Jean (Bill) Bailey, of Mesa, AZ.


He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Janice, Bonnie and Marilyn; and two brothers: Clarence, Jr. and Leland.

Joan and family,
I want to extend my sympathy to you and your family as remember the chats we would have at the clinic. Have missed seeing you walking by.

Jim was such a story teller. He will always be remembered for his kindness. Jeff, Candis, Joan. I am so sorry for your loss. Jim is in a better place. He is able to do all that alzheimers took from him. So hard to see them go. But such a relief they are not suffering any more!! Sorry for your loss!!
