Burdell Lund Obituary

Burdell G. Lund, age 81, of Hayti, SD, passed away on Monday, June 20, 2016, at a care center in Watertown, SD. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 24, 2016, at Hayti Lutheran Church in Hayti. Rev. Randy Eisenbeisz will officiate. Music will be provided by Deanna Olsen as organist and the Men's Quartet: Wayne Thue, Dale Olsen, Gordon Stolp and Bob Arneson. The family is requested to meet at the church on Friday by 10:00 a.m. for a prayer service.





Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel * in Watertown on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and prior to services at the church on Friday.







Burial will be at West Norden Cemetery, rural Hayti. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Cook-Olsen Post #217 of the American Legion, Hayti. Honorary pallbearers will be Burdell's grandchildren: Nichole (Kevin) Pond, Jenna Trumm, Lucas Lund, Carter Lund; his nephew, Mark Lund, and all of Burdell's former students. Active pallbearers will be: Bob Arneson, George Kiner, John Bruce, Wayne Thue, Roger Squires and Randy Phillips.







Memorials may be directed to the ‘Burdell Lund Hamlin Scholarship Fund'.





Burdell was born on October 27, 1934, at Jasper, MN, to Henry B. and Elva B. (Klimes) Lund.

He was baptized and confirmed at Jasper Lutheran Church in Jasper. Burdell graduated from Jasper High School, earned his BS degree from General Beadle College (Dakota State University), Madison, SD, and his MA degree from South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD. Burdell served in the US Navy from August 21, 1952 to February 23, 1955.





On August 12, 1955, Burdell married Bonnie M. (Lengkeek) at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Ramona, SD. He was a high school teacher and principal at Hayti High School and Hamlin High School at Hayti from 1958 to 1993.

Burdell also served as interim superintendent of schools for the Hamlin School District for the 1994/1995 school year.





He was a member of Hayti Lutheran Church, the American Legion and an associate member of NARFE. Burdell enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and attending all of the high school ball games throughout the years. Most important to Burdell was time spent with his family.





Burdell is survived by his wife, Bonnie, of Hayti; two children, Gregory (Tamara) Lund of Sioux Falls, SD, and Cathy (Dana) Trumm of Aberdeen, SD; four grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Duane (Yvonne) Lengkeek and Dale (Anne) Lengkeek; one sister-in-law, Tena Lengkeek; and several nieces and nephews.





He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James Lund and Dennis Lund; and two brothers-in-law, James Lengkeek and Leslie Lengkeek.
