Carl Benthin Obituary
Carl J. Benthin, age 99, of Golden Valley, MN, formerly Watertown, SD, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2015, at a care center in Brooklyn Center, MN.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2015, at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown.
Rev. William Hamill will officiate.
Music will be provided by A.J. Sherrill as organist and Kristi Benthin as soloist.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. prior to the services on Saturday.
Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown.
Carl Benthin was born on August 15, 1915 at Thomas, SD, to Charlie and Mary (Fritz) Benthin.
He was baptized and confirmed at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, rural Grover, SD.
He graduated from Thomas High School in 1933.
On June 27, 1940, Carl married Belvina Rund at her parents' home in Vienna, SD.
The couple farmed in South Dakota and in 1957 moved to Pipestone, MN.
Carl worked for the Hyde Oil Company.
In 1964, they moved to St. Peter, MN.
Carl and Belvina owned and operated the Viking Jr. Motel until their retirement in 1976.
Upon retirement, they moved back to South Dakota, where they lived on Lake Kampeska until moving into Watertown in 1996.
They wintered in Mesa, AZ, for 20 winters.
After 60 years of marriage, Belvina passed away on March 18, 2001.
In 2004, Carl moved to Golden Valley, MN, to be closer to family.
He enjoyed traveling, visiting all 50 states, the Minnesota Twins, and time with his family; especially his two grandchildren Leah and Grant.
In 1950, he coached his wife's women's softball team to the SD State Championship.
Survivors include one son, Tony (Kristi) Benthin, and their two children, Leah and Grant, of Plymouth, MN; one daughter, Roxy Benthin, of Golden Valley, MN; and several extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Belvina; his parents; two sisters: Bertha (John) Mischke and Marie (Bill) DeGroot.
