Charles Stormo Obituary

Charles Otto Stormo, age 85, of Hayti, SD, passed away peacefully March 11, 2015, while he and his wife, Helen, were visiting their daughter, Kay, in Georgetown, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 6, 2015, at New Hope Lutheran Church in Hayti.

Pastor Randy Eisenbeisz will officiate.

Music will be provided by Helen Prouty as organist with Lindsey Stormo as soloist.





Visitation will be at New Hope Lutheran Church on Monday beginning at 9 a.m. prior to services.





Burial will be at New Hope Cemetery, Hayti.

Pallbearers will be Charles' grandchildren.







Charles was born September 26, 1929, to James and Mabel (Stemwedel) Stormo at home in Hamlin County on the farm where he lived most of his life. He graduated from Thomas High School and attended Valparaiso University.







On June 23, 1951, Charles married Helen Herbst at Mitchell, SD.

Charles served in the U.S. Army and then returned to South Dakota State University, graduating with BS and MS in Agricultural Education.





A lifelong farmer and teacher, Charles taught in Volga, Lake Preston, Willow Lake, Hazel, South Shore and Hamlin School Districts.

He served on the Watertown School Board and the South Dakota State Board of Vocational Education.

Their stewardship of the Stormo family farm included conserving wildlife, irrigating sweet corn, shepherding sheep and creating a butterfly garden. After Charles retired, he and Helen helped 13 Lutheran congregations build and/or remodel churches with the Mission Builders.

Charles was "Mr. Fixit" for family and friends and an active member of New Hope Lutheran Church, Farmers Union, American Legion and Gideons. Charles' interests included science demonstrations, pheasant hunting, travel, sports, playing pinochle, photography and telling jokes.





Charles is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen, of Hayti, SD; children Paul of Elma, WA, and his children Aaron (Angie) and their children Elizabeth and George, and Leah (Will) Soles; Loren (Joni) of Florence, MT, and their children Lindsey (Sean) and Paige (John) Archibald and child Marissa;

Keith (Mary) of Moscow, ID, and their children Aimee (Koda) and Grant and child Eben; Kay (Britt) Freund of Georgetown, TX, and their children Katrina and Randy;

and Nathan (Tammy) of Highlands Ranch, CO, and their children Drew and Brooke.

Also surviving are sister-in-laws: Rosalyn Stormo, Pat Stormo, Marilyn Stormo, Virginia Wilcox and Ramona Neidlinger and numerous nieces and nephews.





He was preceded in death by parents; and siblings: Carrol, Don, Earl, Milo, Mavis and Jerry.





His passion for teaching was reflected in his donation of his organs for other living persons or educational research.
