Donald Gullickson Obituary

Donald E. Gullickson, age 92, of Brookings, SD, formerly Hayti, SD, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2015, at a care center in Brookings.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 22, 2015, at Hayti Lutheran Church in Hayti.

Pastor Randy Eisenbeisz will officiate.

Music will be provided by Deanna Olsen as organist.







Visitation will be prior to services from 12 to 1 p.m. at the church on Friday.







Burial will be at the West Norden Cemetery in rural Hayti, SD.

Military graveside honors will be conducted by Cook-Olsen Post #217 of the American Legion of Hayti. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Cook-Olsen American Legion. Active pallbearers will be Duane Wastweet, Randy Frederick, Robert Satterness, Charles Arneson, Willis Frederick and Larry Brusse.







Donald was born on June 9, 1922, in rural Hayti, SD, to Arthur and Nellie (Jensen) Gullickson.

His mother Nellie died shortly after Donald's birth and he was then raised by his grandparents, JP and Mary Jensen, in rural Hayti.







On April 14, 1944, Donald married Evelyn Stormo in rural Hayti.

They recently celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary.

He joined the U.S. Army and entered service shortly after their wedding in June of 1944.

Donald served in World War II in the Battle of the Bulge.

While there, he was wounded and received the Purple Heart Infantryman Badge and two Bronze Service Stars for Distinguished Unit Citation.

He was honorably discharged in July 1946.

Prior to his military service, Donald had worked at the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Following his discharge, he worked as Hamlin County Clerk of Courts.

Donald also worked at Community State Bank of Hayti and was a rural mail carrier for 27 years, retiring in November 1982.

He was noted for his commitment to his patrons and always being on time.







He was an active member of the Cook-Olsen Post #217 of the American Legion of Hayti, the Hayti Lutheran Church and the Rural Mail Carriers Association.

He enjoyed the outdoors and especially enjoyed trapping, hunting and fishing.







Donald is survived by his wife, Evelyn; two daughters: Julie and Robert Bell of Brookings, SD, and Dr. Gail Gullickson of Alameda, CA; two step-granddaughters: Tamara Smithee of Hutchinson, MN, and Laurie Bailey of Marshfield, MO; and four step great-grandchildren.







He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harold "Bud" Gullickson; and one sister, Ann Peterson.
