Donald D. Skoglund, age 85, of Lake Norden, SD, passed away on Thursday, March 8, 2018, at the hospital in Watertown, SD. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 12, 2018, at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Lake Norden. Pastor Joe Turrill will officiate. Music will be provided by Helen Hoglund as organist and Dean Skoglund as soloist. The family is requested to meet at the church on Monday by 9:30 a.m. for a family prayer service.
Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and prior to services at the church on Monday.
Burial will be at the West Norden Cemetery in rural Hayti, SD. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Cook-Olsen Post #217 of the American Legion, Hayti.
Honorary pallbearer will be Donald's great-grandson, Jett Enstad. Active pallbearers will be Donald's grandchildren: Jesse (Lisa) Enstad, Sara (Jordan) Doell, Blake Enstad, Michaela Skoglund, Tate Skoglund, Zachery (Becca) Otto, Matthew Otto and Jacob Otto.
Donald was born on June 20, 1932, in Lake Norden, SD, to Fred and Esther (Palmquist) Skoglund. He attended and graduated from Lake Norden High School in 1950.
He then entered the United States Air Force and received an honorable discharge.
On March 30, 1957, Donald married Ruth Erickson in Lake Norden. He began farming and was a substitute mail carrier. He also worked as a groundskeeper at Lake Region Golf Course. Donald later went to a full-time position as a rural mail carrier.
He was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Lake Norden, the Hayti American Legion and Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed hunting, being on the golf course and watching and filming hunting and his grandchildren's events and activities. He also enjoyed bowling and loved playing cards and Bingo. Donald liked visiting and making friends everywhere he went.
Donald is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Lake Norden; three children: Jolene (Doug) Enstad and Doug (Barb) Skoglund all of Watertown and Monica (Jeffrey) Otto of Lucan, MN; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters-in-law, Shirley Skoglund of Sioux Falls, SD, and Dorothy Skoglund of Thief River Falls, MN.
He was preceded in death by an infant child; one grandson, Joseph Skoglund; his parents; and four brothers.
