DuWayne A. Krause, age 83, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Wednesday, November 25, 2015, at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 30, 2015, at the American Lutheran Church in Castlewood, SD.
Rev. Bill Hamill and Rev. Roger Spahr will officiate.
Music will be provided by Marsha Kurtenbach as organist with Neal Mack as soloist.
The family is requested to meet at the church on Monday by 1:30 p.m. for a prayer service.
Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. and prior to services at the church on Monday.
Burial will be at the Castlewood Cemetery in Castlewood.
Military graveside honors will be conducted by the American Legion - Codington County Post #17 of Watertown and Post #250 of Castlewood; Frank H. Adams Post #750 of Veterans of Foreign Wars; and the Funeral Honors Team of the SD Army National Guard. Pallbearers will be: Tim Popham, Ryan Hofkamp, Marc Mack, DWayne Anderson, Mike Krause and Brody Popham.
DuWayne was born on August 27, 1932, in Havana Township, Deuel County, SD, to Harold and Henrietta "Rekie" (Ruesink) Krause.
He attended Hamlin #5 grade school and received his GED later in life.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in December of 1952 to November 1954 serving in Korea keeping the ‘M' boats in working order.
On July 13, 1955, DuWayne married Shirley Janssen at Castlewood, SD.
He worked construction for Bill Salonen for a short time before becoming a fulltime dairy and grain farmer.
During that time he also sold Disco seed corn, was a substitute milk hauler for Castlewood Creamery, did custom spraying and hay grinding and also did some electrical wiring. DuWayne was the recipient of the ‘Outstanding Young Farmer Award'. He obtained his private pilot license in 1970 and worked predator control for the state, hunting fox and coyote from the air.
He also chartered friends on many flights.
Shirley passed away on April 5, 1998, and DuWayne married Maxine Buyert on May 22, 1999, in Watertown, SD.
He was a member of the Castlewood American Lutheran Church, American Legion, V.F.W., D.A.V., Elks, Shriners, Masons, Golden Age Service Club and Winnebago Travelers. DuWayne was instrumental in starting the Sioux Rural Water System where he served as a board member for many years. He also served on boards for several other organizations including: American Lutheran Church, Castlewood Elevator, township weed, Lutheran Brotherhood, Castlewood School and was township supervisor for a period of time. Over the years, DuWayne enjoyed flying his planes, hunting, fishing, bowling, photography, music, playing cards, woodworking, watching football, especially the Minnesota Vikings, gardening and camping.
He especially loved music and played in various bands including Dakota Country.
For the past 15 years, he and Maxine entertained in nursing homes, often with their dog, Bailey. DuWayne could fix anything and was not afraid to try.
It seemed there was nothing he couldn't do from wiring and plumbing to carpentry and mechanical.
He loved to help people in any way he could.
DuWayne had a one-of-a-kind witty, mischievous personality appreciated by many.
DuWayne is survived by his wife, Maxine, of Watertown; two children, Sheila Krause and Rich (Tammi) Krause all of Watertown; six grandchildren: Kristi Popham, Tim Popham, Heather Krause, Kelli Krause, Julie Kuno and Charlie Kuno; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers-in-law: Harley Buyert of Palm Springs, CA, Wesley Buyert of Bemis, SD, and Wayne "Butch" (Mary) Janssen of Castlewood; and two nieces and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley; two daughters, Cindy Popham and Sonja Kuno; his parents; one sister, Ramona Blashill, and one brother-in-law, Dick Blashill.
