Gertrude H. (Mrs. Ervin) Schumacher, age 87, of Watertown, SD, was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 29, 2016, at a care center in Watertown. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Watertown. Rev. Christina Matson will officiate. Music will be provided by A. J. Sherrill as organist with Robbyn Givens as soloist.
Visitation will be at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown. Pallbearers will be Tatum Hilmoe, Bryan Klipfel, Kenneth Kunz, Anthony Schumacher, Matthew Schumacher and Reeve Schumacher.
Donations may be directed to Prairie Lakes Hospice of Watertown.
Gertrude was born on March 28, 1928, in Ashley, ND, to Fred and Lydia (Bender) Klipfel. She graduated from Ashley High School in 1945. Gertrude attended Ellendale State College, where she received her teaching certificate.
On November 3, 1946, Gertrude married the love of her life, Ervin Schumacher, in Ashley, ND. Following their marriage, the couple purchased a farm, where they lived and farmed for 12 years, while she taught country school. They sold their farm and Gertrude attended the University of North Dakota and received her degree in Education. They moved to and she taught in several cities including: Standing Rock Reservation-McIntosh, SD, Mobridge, SD, and Pierre, SD, where she taught until her retirement. Gertrude completed 35 years of teaching.
Ervin and Gertrude celebrated 69 years together traveling and enjoying many beautiful winters in Arizona. She had a strong faith in the Lord. Gertrude was a member of Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Watertown and Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mesa, AZ. Her family, children and great-grandchildren were her greatest joys. She loved friends stopping over to visit. Playing games with family and friends was a passion of hers.
Gertrude's homemade donuts were something she was known for, and no one else has been able to duplicate the recipe. She was also an avid sports fan, watching college hockey, football and soccer, always knowing what games were being played and who won.
Happy to have shared her life with her, are her husband, Ervin, of Watertown; one daughter, Candace Schumacher, of Watertown; one son, Randall (Tamara) Schumacher, of Minnetonka, MN; four grandchildren: Tatum (Jessica) Hilmoe, Holly (Paul) Nielsen, Destiny (Joe) Hagen and Reeve (Melanie) Schumacher; seven great-grandchildren: Xander, Hudson, Elizabeth, Zoe, Bennett, Ocean and Messidor; one sister, Bernice Gehring, of Lodi, CA; and one sister-in-law, Erma Schumacher, of Alexandria, VA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Raymond Klipfel; and three sisters: Erna Scherle, Darlene Mund and Betty Finger.
