John Manzey Obituary

John L. Manzey, age 78, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2017, at the hospital in Watertown, SD. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 23, 2017, at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Watertown. The family will be receiving friends prior to services at the church on Thursday, starting at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Kent Stillson and Justin Manzey will officiate. Music will be provided by A. J. Sherrill with congregational singing, the grandchildren and great-grandchildren and Kyler Julius as soloist. The family is requested to meet at the church on Thursday by 10:30 a.m. for a prayer service.





Arrangements are being handled by the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel of Watertown.





Burial will take place at a later date. Military honors will be conducted at the church by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion of Watertown and the Funeral Honors Team of the SD Army National Guard.





John was born on November 5, 1938, at Sherburn, MN, to Leo and Irene (Kahler) Manzey. He graduated from Sherburn High School in 1956. John enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1959 and was stationed at Ft. Bragg in South Carolina. Following an honorable discharge, he spent most of his life as a rancher raising feeder cattle and hogs. John married Mary Jo Groth on May 22, 1970, at Sioux Falls, SD. In 1984, John studied to become a Farm Bureau insurance agent. He was employed as an agent for 20 years when he achieved the Royal Court Award of Honor for excellence in sales.





He loved collecting tractors, watching NASCAR racing and attending his grandchildren's activities. John enjoyed snowmobiling, riding horse and singing in the church choir. He was an avid fan of the Minnesota Gophers, Twins and Vikings.





Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife, Mary Jo, of Watertown; his seven children: Brian (Donna) Manzey of Flandreau, SD, Leslie (Troy) Bakken of Brandon, SD, Kara (Chad) Julius of Watertown, Thomas Manzey of Brandon, Justin (Kim) Manzey of Abbotsford, BC, Michele Bronson of Chandler, AZ, and Pamela (Ty) Vance of Knoxville, TN; 23 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; one brother, Bruce (Nancy) Manzey, of Eden Prairie, MN; and many other family and friends.





He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dale and Richard Manzey; and Janet Manzey.
