LaVern R. Bloom, age 90, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Monday, July 25, 2016, at a care center in Slayton, MN. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 29, 2016, at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown. Rev. Janet Miller will officiate. Music will be provided by Marcia Jelsma as organist with Judy Everson as soloist. The family is requested to meet at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the church for a family prayer service.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Thursday and prior to services at the church on Friday.
Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown. Military graveside honors will be conducted by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion, Watertown, and the Funeral Honors Team of the SD Army National Guard. Honorary pallbearer will be LaVern's brother, Earl Bloom. Active pallbearers will be his nephews: Mark Bloom, Monte Bloom, Marty Bloom, Donnie Bloom and Mark Lane and his son-in-law, Stuart Scott.
LaVern was born on a farm in rural Day County, SD, on October 28, 1925, to Harry and Sadie (Carr) Bloom. After graduating from Webster High School, Webster, SD, in 1943, Lavern enlisted in the U. S. Army. Following an honorable discharge, he attended Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls, SD, working at the Webster Bakery in Webster on the weekends. LaVern graduated with a degree in Accounting. After graduation, he lived in Watertown and worked for Fredricks Accounting Firm.
On June 18, 1950, LaVern was united in marriage to Gloria Boxeth, in Summit, SD. They continued to make their home in Watertown. He took over Kampen Accounting Firm, which later became Bloom Accounting Service aka LaVern R. Bloom Accounting. LaVern owned his business for over 45 years in Watertown.
He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, serving as the church treasurer for 30 years. He was also a life member of the American Legion and the Elks, where he served as financial officer and was ‘Elk of the Year' in 1971. LaVern enjoyed golfing, hunting, playing cards, dancing and gardening. He also enjoyed doing construction work and spending time on his property at the lake. His special times were spent with his grandchildren.
LaVern is survived by his children, Larry Bloom of Lino Lakes, MN, and Linda Bloom Scott (Stuart Scott) of Marshall, MN; one brother, Earl Bloom, of Webster, SD; and four grandchildren: Evan (Amber) Bloom, Abigail Scott, Owen Bloom and Matthew Scott.
He was preceded in death by his wife; one grandson, Troy Scott; his parents; two brothers, Harold and Donald; and one sister, Dorothy Camp.
