Lien Marso Obituary

Lien C. Marso, age 84, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Wednesday, August 3, 2016, at his residence. A Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9, 2016, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Watertown. Fr. Paul Rutten will be the celebrant. Music will be provided by Danielle Holmquist-Holida as organist, Marie Coon as guitarist and the I. C. Funeral Choir. The family is requested to meet at the church on Tuesday by 1:30 p.m. for a family prayer service.





Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Monday from 5-7 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will also be prior to services on Tuesday at the church.





Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Watertown. Military graveside honors will be conducted by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion, Watertown, and the Funeral Honors Team of the SD Army National Guard. Active pallbearers will be: Cory Reeve, Jeffrey Reeve, Cody Barker, Austin Galinat, Matt Sigler and Jessiah Paul.





Lien was born on July 5, 1932, in Harrold, SD, to Charles and Leone (Lien) Marso. He grew up in Harrold and attended all 12 years of school there. Lien loved sports, but only track and basketball were offered at that time. He played basketball in grade school and went on to play all four years while in high school. In 1951, his senior year, the team won the SD Class B basketball tournament in Mitchell, SD.





In 1954 Lien was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Signal Corp. While stationed in Ft. Ord, CA, among his other duties, he managed to play baseball for the Signal Corp. team. Lien was honorably discharged in 1956.





On June 12, 1956, Lien married Bettie Galinat in Harrold. He started working for John Deere in Highmore, SD. In 1966, the couple moved to Watertown, where he worked at Codington County Implement, retiring in 1997, having worked for John Deere for almost 50 years. After retirement, Lien and Bettie traveled the United States in a 5th wheel for four years, after which they returned to live in Watertown.





Lien is survived by his wife, Bettie; his children: Terry Marso, of Bastrop, LA, LeAnn (Douglas) Caulfield, of Watertown, SD, and Leisa (Dana) Reeve, of Sioux Falls, SD; three grandchildren: Cory Reeve, Jeffrey Reeve and Heath Marso; one brother, Kenneth (Marlys) Marso, of Spearfish, SD; two sisters, Marjorie Tamburello of Wichita, KS, and Rosemary Tarr of Brentwood, CA; several nieces and nephews; and two brothers-in-law, Marvin (Florence) Galinat and Gary (Lynda) Galinat.





He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother-in-law, John Tamburello.
