Margarete Schmidt Obituary
Margarete B. "Peg" Schmidt, age 92, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Wednesday, January 21, 2015, at a care center in Ipswich, SD.
She was the widow of Kermit Schmidt.
Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 26, 2015, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Watertown.
The celebrant will be Fr. Michael Wensing.
Music will be provided by Jane Rokusek as organist with Blaine Martian as song leader.
The family is requested to meet at the church on Monday by 10:30 a.m. for a prayer service.
Visitation will be at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and prior to services at the church on Monday.
Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Watertown.
Honorary pallbearers will be: Wade Dykema, Dave Helken and all of Peg's grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Active pallbearers will be: Jim Martz, Jr., David Martz, Brian Hammrich, Bruce Hammrich, Michael Benton and Zachary Benton.
Peg was born on November 6, 1922, at Milbank, SD, to John A. and Regina (Lesmeister) Giessinger.
She graduated from Milbank High School in 1940.
On February 22, 1941, Peg married Kermit Schmidt at Milbank, SD.
The couple lived in Milbank and later moved to Webster, Aberdeen, and Ipswich where Peg held various secretarial jobs.
They moved to Watertown in 1961 and Peg continued to make her home there following Kermit's death in 2011.
She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church.
Peg enjoyed sewing, reading, golfing, bowling and was a ‘life master' in Bridge.
She loved cooking for her family and spending time with them whenever possible.
Peg is survived by her three children: Diane (Jake) Hammrich of Ipswich, Rickie (Denny) Benton of Mina, SD, and Peggy (Jim) Martz of Watertown; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one brother, Eugene (Nancy) Giessinger, of Huron, SD.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother; and two sisters.
