Nicholas Charles "Nick" Werling, age 90, of Fort Wayne, IN, passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2015, at Jenkins Living Center in Watertown, SD.
Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 22, 2015, at Trinity English Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, IN.
Visitation will be at the Trinity English Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, IN, prior to services from 1 to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Burial of cremains will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Fort Wayne, IN, at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 20, 2015.
Nicholas Charles Werling was born on December 11, 1924, in Fort Wayne, IN, to Russell Dewey and Pearl (Lewis) Werling.
At 1 ½ years old, he contracted Polio and was treated at Shriners Hospital in Chicago, IL.
He graduated from Fort Wayne Northside High School in 1943, from Bowling Green State University in 1947, and earned a Masters in Education from St. Francis University.
On December 23, 1955, Nick married Lily Christine Frahm at Fort Wayne.
He taught at Hillcrest School and then for 35 years at Elmhurst High School in Fort Wayne, retiring in 1987.
He taught US History and Government, and coached basketball and golf.
He was a good and faithful man who loved his wife, children and grandchildren, who loved his students and his work as a teacher and coach, and was a very well-loved and respected teacher by his peers and former students.
Nick and Christine lovingly took care of their son Matthew, before he lost his 15 year battle with cancer in 1995.
The couple enjoyed wintering at Long Boat Key, FL, for many years.
Christine passed away in 2007.
Nick lived a life that witnessed to his Christian faith, he enjoyed teaching people, and he was a lifelong Freemason and Chicago Cubs fan.
He was very proud to have lived in his own home for all but the last three weeks of his life.
Nick is survived by four sons: Nicholas Craig (Janine Rew) Werling of Watertown, SD, Jeffrey (Pam) Werling of San Diego, CA, Andrew Werling of Ning De City, Fujian China, and Benjamin (Amy) Werling of Chicago, IL; five grandchildren: Emma Christine (Mark) Nelsen, Hanna Sophia Werling, Grant Arthur Werling, Jackson Ross Werling, and Madeline Shay Werling; and one sister, Naoma Hettinger, of Fort Wayne.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine; his parents; one son, Matthew; and two brothers: William and Frank.
