Paul Mertz Obituary

Paul J. Mertz, age 66, of Goodwin, SD, passed away on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at his residence. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 26, 2017, at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Watertown, SD. Rev. Paul Krause will officiate. Music will be provided by Rebecca Larson as organist with congregational singing. The family is requested to meet at the church on Monday by 9:30 a.m. for a prayer service.





Visitation will be at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watertown, 1800 East Kemp, on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. and prior to services at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer on Monday.





Burial will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Paul's grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be: Darwin Mack, John Weismantel, Billie Moshier, Bryan Arendsee, John Deniger and Gene Clement.

Paul was born on May 17, 1951, at Hoven, SD, to Ernest and Dorothy (Giedt) Mertz. He graduated from Bowdle High School in 1969.





On August 19, 1972, Paul married Rosemary "Rosy" Dewald at Bowdle, SD. While attending college at NSU in Aberdeen, SD, Paul started working for Bonanza. Following his graduation from NSU in 1979, he and Rosy moved to Watertown and started the Bonanza restaurant which Paul owned and successfully operated for 20 years. He then worked for HSA (Human Service Agency) and in 2003, he started working in advertising sales for Watertown Radio. Paul was currently working at the radio station while owning and operating "Mertz Fencing" with his son, Adam.





He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Watertown. Paul's greatest love was the time he spent with his children and grandchildren.





Paul is survived by his loving spouse, Rosy, and granddaughter, Marisa, of Goodwin; three sons: Adam (Teffanie) Mertz of Watertown and their children: Tyler, Matthew, Andrew, Lilli and Myla, Christopher (Stacey) Mertz of Chapel Hill, NC, and their children: Aubree, Aspen, Marcus and Manny, and Scott (Serina) Mertz of Dickinson, ND, and their children: Elliot, Vanessa, Shia and Lane; four brothers: Ernie (Pauline) Mertz of Bowdle, SD, Dean (Debbie) Mertz of Sioux Falls, SD, Mike (Kathy) Mertz of Aberdeen, SD, and Garry (Monica) Mertz of Ellendale, ND; one sister, Ruth (Don) Claeys, of Longmont, CA; and many, many nieces and nephews.





He was preceded in death by his parents.
