Robert Burkine Obituary
Robert J. "Bob" Burkine, age 90, of Castle Rock, CO, formerly Watertown, SD, passed away on Monday, January 19, 2015, at Bonaventure Retirement Center in Castle Rock, Co.
Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2015, at Family Worship Center Foursquare Church in Watertown with Pastor Jim Knudsen officiating.
Music will be provided by Anita Bogue with Kathryn and Pastor Steve Ferguson and Lezlie Burns as vocalists.
The family is requested to meet at the church on Sunday by 2:30 p.m. for a family prayer service. Visitation will be held prior to services at the church on Sunday.
Burial will take place on Monday, January 26, 2015, at 1:30 p.m. at Eagle Presbyterian Cemetery in rural Kimball, SD.
Pallbearers will be: Kenneth Pestal, Dennis Pestal, Chris Pestal, Lyle Dean Nepodal, Gerald Nepodal, Robert Goos, Herman Turnis, Jim Jaton, Roger Clement, David Minor and Lyle Hayek.
Bob was born on January 25, 1924, on the family homestead near Kimball, SD, to Fred and Frances (Pekarek) Burkine.
He graduated from Kimball High School and started farming with his father.
On December 25, 1947, Bob married Betty Maresh at Olive Presbyterian Church in Platte, SD.
They had one daughter, Kaija.
The couple farmed and ranched in Eagle Township until 1955.
They then moved to Highland Township where they farmed until retirement in 1989.
Bob and Betty spent several winters in Casa Grande, AZ, where they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997 with all of their family present.
They moved to Watertown in 1998.
Bob continued to winter in Arizona for 10 years after Betty passed away.
A lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church and of Gideon International Bob trusted his Lord and loved the Word, sharing it faithfully at a local Bible study each week in Colorado.
Bob volunteered at the Watertown Senior Center for 10 years, enjoyed camping and was an amateur radio operator for many years. He cherished his family and friends and enjoyed being part of the lives of his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren, stating that the favorite part of his week was during any one of their visits.
Bob is survived by his daughter, Kaija Graves, of Watertown; four grandchildren: Dr. Adam (Rosana) Graves of Castle Rock, CO, Terra (Chris) Houltberg of Minneapolis, MN, Dr. Jason (Adrienne) Graves of Castle Rock, CO, and Tonja Graves (Jimmie) Schmitt of Castle Rock, CO; six great-grandchildren: Emily Graves, Xavier Graves, Averie Graves, Ryan Graves, Ari Houltberg and Indigo Houltberg; one sister, Eileen (Lyle) Nepodal of Platte, SD; and one brother-in-law, Clarence Pestal, of Wahoo, NE.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; one grandson, Noah Graves; one son-in-law, Steve Graves; his parents; and one sister, Ruby DeVries.
