Shirley Rose Jongeling, age 91, of Watertown, SD, formerly Castlewood, SD, passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2016, at a care center in Watertown. She was the widow of Donald H. Jongeling. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at First Presbyterian Church in Castlewood. Pastor Terry Drew will officiate. Music will be provided by Marsha Kurtenbach as organist with Pastor Terry Drew as soloist. The family is requested to meet at the church on Wednesday by 10:00 a.m. for a prayer service.
Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
Burial will be at Hamlin Reformed Cemetery, rural Castlewood. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Shirley's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be Shirley's grandsons: Clint Bruinsma, Charlie Epps, Don "Rocky" Epps and Jared Jongeling; great-grandsons: Collin Duke, Brady Warne and Devaron Hlavinka and her nephew, Dwayne Gorder.
Shirley was born on May 29, 1925, to Nick and Rose (Huss) Kones. She was the second child born to them and had three brothers and one sister. Shirley attended school in Castlewood through all 12 of her educational years. While living at home, Shirley worked at Lindersmith's Drug Store.
After graduating from high school, Shirley married Donald H. Jongeling on June 24, 1943, at Watertown, SD.
The couple farmed near Dempster, SD, and raised three daughters and one son. Besides helping with work around the farm, Shirley also worked at Estelline Zafft's Jack and Jill and weighed flax straw for Sweitzers.
Don and Shirley were very active in church at the Hamlin Reformed Church of rural Castlewood, where she played organ and taught Sunday school. They sang together at many church funerals and other gatherings.
After selling the farm, Don and Shirley moved to Watertown. There, Shirley worked at Mahowald's Hardware and Memorial Hospital; did janitorial work at WAPA and wallpapered and painted for Hoftiezer Real Estate. Don passed away suddenly in 1984. Shirley moved to Castlewood in 1999 to live with her daughter, Sandy, and her family for 17 years, moving to Jenkins Living Center just one year ago.
Loving music, she helped organize ‘The Incredibles' of Castlewood and played the accordion. George Jones was a favorite singer of hers and she also loved gospel music. Shirley enjoyed watching sports on television. NASCAR and Dale Earnhardt, Jr., the Chicago Cubs and Brett Favre were among her favorite sports icons. She enjoyed spending time with all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and lovingly became known as "Greaty" to everyone.
Shirley is survived by four children: Patricia (Chuck) Epps of Watertown, Sandy (Ray) Duke of Castlewood, Barbara Jongeling of Castlewood and Donald (Donna) Jongeling of Watertown; one brother, Joe (Faye) Kones, of Watertown; one sister, Hazel Klos, of Watertown; nine grandchildren: Coleen Duke, Jackie Duke, Mindy (Dave) Hlavinka, Charlie (Renae) Epps, Don (Tina) Epps, Amy (Kelly) Haug, Clinton (Sarah) Bruinsma, Angie (Larry) Langenfeld and Jared Jongeling; 18 great-grandchildren: Korena, Dominic, Tristan, Braxton, Chase, Zoe, Jasmine, Zane, Collin, Devaron, Emily, Cassandra, Brady, Addison, Logan, Caden, Brooke and Clay; five step-grandchildren: Jordan, Mark, Matt, Marshall and Melissa; and nine step-great-grandchildren: Jordan, Garrett, Owen, Bella, Wyatt, Jada, Morgan, Avery and Kane.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Don; her parents and three brothers: Edwin, Bill and Tom.
