Viola Brekke Obituary
Viola P. Brekke, age 97, of Watertown, SD, formerly of the Vienna/Hayti, SD, area passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2015, at a care center in Watertown.
She was the widow of Sidney Brekke.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 27, 2015, at New Hope Lutheran Church in rural Hayti, SD.
Rev. Mark Jamison will officiate. Music will be provided by Helen Prouty as organist with congregational singing. The family is requested to meet at the church on Monday by 10:00 a.m. to attend the services.
Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.
Burial will be at New Hope Lutheran Cemetery in rural Hayti.
Pallbearers will be Viola's grandsons and nephews.
Viola was born on May 15, 1918, in Kingsbury County, SD, to Ross and Matilda (Opsal) Fordyce.
She attended rural school and graduated from Hazel High School, Hazel, SD.
Viola continued her education by attending Watertown Business University.
She started working at Community State Bank in Hayti.
On February 9, 1947, Viola married Sidney Brekke at Hayti.
Following her marriage, she continued to work at the bank for a total of 11 years.
She was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church; the Women's Society, where she held various offices; and the VFW Auxiliary. Viola enjoyed bowling, baseball and softball.
She also enjoyed sewing and baking.
Her cookie jars were always full for her grandchildren.
Viola is survived by her children: Connie Kranz of Goodwin, SD, Dean (Sylvia) Brekke of Phoenix, AZ, Marsha (Chris) Asbury of Casper, WY, and Monica Lemme of Tucson, AZ; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney; her parents; two brothers; two sisters; and two sons-in-law, Gary and Mike.
