What To Do
Donald J. "Don" Brownell, age 88, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at Grace Lutheran Church. Rev. Janet Miller will officiate. Music will be provided by Marcia Jelsma as organist and Don Seim as soloist. The family is requested to meet at the church on Thursday by 10:00 a.m. for a prayer service.
Visitation will be at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 from 4-7 p.m. and prior to the services at the church on Thursday.
Military honors will be conducted by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion, Watertown, and the Military Funeral Honors Team of the U.S. Navy, following the services at the church. Honorary pallbearers will be the friends and family at Lew’s Fireworks. Active pallbearers will be Don’s great-grandchildren: Dmitrix Brownell, Miickel Brownell, Connor Herman, Trinity Herman, Tucker Brownell, Delton Brownell, Kenley Brownell, and Braxton Brownell.
Don was born on June 15, 1930 in Haynes, ND to Fred and Wauneta (Bradley) Brownell. He attended high school in Belle Fourche, SD and entered into the U.S. Navy. After he was discharged, he moved to Watertown. He married Ardell Brinkman on January 31, 1954 at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown, where the couple decided to raise their family. Don worked at Old Home Bakery before working many years in service, sales, shipping and receiving at Montgomery Wards. He later worked at Kampeska Lodge and was a Deputy Sheriff before he began working at Lew’s Fireworks. Most recently, Don worked security at the Dakota Sioux Casino until he retired at age 81.
Don was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and a member of the Eagles Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and making jewelry and leather goods. He was especially proud of teaching the Hunters Safety Course for 19 years in Watertown. Don was known for his gift of gab, his handcuffs and his love for his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the highlights of his life.
Don is survived by his children, Mike “Bernie” Brownell and Rick Brownell, both of Watertown; six grandchildren: Sharon Herman (Travis Klug), Eric Brownell, Colby (Jessica) Brownell, Rodney (Kayla) Brownell, Chelsea Brownell, and Adrienne Lang; eight great-grandchildren: Dmitrix Brownell, Miickel Brownell, Connor Herman, Trinity Herman, Tucker Brownell, Delton Brownell, Kenley Brownell, and Braxton Brownell; and his brother, Cliff (Jeanine) Brownell, of Littleton, CO.
Don was preceded in death by his wife, Ardell; his parents, Fred and Wauneta; one brother; one sister; and his mother and father-in-law, Garrett and Lena Brinkman.
