What To Do
Ila Mae Luken, age 91, of Watertown, SD, formerly Hazel, SD, passed away on Tuesday, February 26, 2019, at the local hospital. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2019, at Cornerstone United Methodist Church. Pastor Luke Smith and Pastor Mark Tracy will officiate. Music will be provided by Nona Clifford as organist and Janet Struckman as pianist with Jerry Stolp as soloist. The family is requested to meet at the church by 10:00 a.m. on Saturday for a family prayer service.
Visitation will be at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel on Friday from 5-7 p.m. and also prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Ila Mae’s grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be her grandsons: Brock Gasper, Jason Hutt, Adam Kuhlman, Caleb Kuhlman, Derek Luken and Eric Luken.
Ila Mae was born on April 23, 1927, to Edwin and Cletus (Schaeffer) Robish, in Hazel, SD. After graduating from Hazel High School in 1945, Ila Mae attended Dakota State in Madison, SD, where she received her Teaching Certificate.
On September 14, 1947, Ila Mae was united in marriage to Walter Luken. The couple farmed in the Hazel area and Ila Mae started teaching in rural country schools near Bryant. After starting their family, she stayed home raising their family and assisting Walt on the farm. They continued farming until 1992. Walt and Ila Mae enjoyed 39 winters in Arizona. The couple moved to Watertown in August 2017.
She was a member of Kellerton United Methodist Church where she also taught Sunday School. She loved her flower gardens on the farm. Ila Mae enjoyed bowling, crafting, crocheting and making bread. She and Walt enjoyed entertaining people while wintering in Arizona. Her special times were spent with her grandchildren, playing cards and baking.
Ila Mae is survived by her husband, Walter, of Watertown, SD; her children, Wanda Gasper of Rapid City, SD, and Curt (Jill) Luken of Hazel, SD; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; her daughter-in-law, Leah Luken of Watertown, SD; her son-in-law, Myron Kuhlman of Hazel, SD; and her sister, Margaret Gjerde of Watertown, SD.
She was precedd in death by her parents; her son, Neil; her daughter, Joy Kuhlman; two brothers, Wesley and Maynard; two sisters, Phyllis and Ramona; and two grandchildren, Heather and Virgil.
The family prefers Memorials to the Kellerton Cemetery Fund.
