Joanita Meyer Obituary
Joanita A. Meyer, age 94, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Thursday, November 29, 2018, at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown.
She was the widow of William "Bill" J. Meyer.
Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 5, 2018, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Watertown.
Father Michael Wensing will be the celebrant. Music will be provided by Jane Rokusek as organist with Blaine Martian as the song leader.
Family is requested to meet at the church at 10:30 a.m. for a prayer service. Visitation will be at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, from 4-7 p.m. and prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Burial will take place at a later date at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Meyer, Chesney Dorsey, Linda Brekke, Danny Brekke, Jesse Meyer, Billy Meyer, Justin Meyer, Tyrone Meyer, James Meyer, Jason Meyer, Jacklyn Meyer, Stuart Meyer, Sarah Meyer, Abby Meyer and Callie Meyer. Joanita was born on September 28, 1924, in Waverly, SD, to Frank and Frances (Liefledt) Schmitt.
She graduated from Waverly High School and attended Presentation School for nursing where she received her RN degree. On August 28, 1947, Joanita married William "Bill" Meyer in Waverly, SD.
She began working full time as a nurse at Memorial Hospital in Watertown and later stepped down to part time as she began raising her family.
The family moved to Mitchell, SD, where Joanita and Bill ran the Brigg Restaurant.
They later retired and moved back to Watertown.
During retirement, Joanita worked as a hostess at the Wheel Inn. She was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church and the Watertown Elks Lodge.
In her spare time, Joanita enjoyed reading and cooking.
She loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. Joanita is survived by her children: Thomas (Ann) Meyer of Florida, Ramona (Ronald) Brekke of Watertown, SD, Michael (Judy) Meyer of Hayti, SD, Jim Meyer of Balsom Lake, WI, Terry Meyer of Foley, AL, Greg (Eileen) Meyer of Eden, SD, and Roger (Julie) Meyer of Watertown, SD; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; her brother, Stanley Schmitt of Watertown, SD; her sister, Geraldine O'Hara of Minneapolis, MN and two sisters-in-law, Delores Meyer of Watertown, SD, and Dolly Meyer of Hayti, SD. Joanita is preceded in death by her husband, Bill, her parents and one grandson, Michael Meyer.
