Maxine A. Bohl, age 97, of Hayti, SD, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2019, at the Estelline Nursing Care Center in Estelline, SD. She was the widow of William Bohl. A private family service will be held. Maxine was born on July 13, 1921, to Thomas and Agnes (Andersen) Shelsta, in Watertown, SD. She received her teaching degree from Dakota State University in Madison, SD, and taught at various small schools around the area. She also inspected B17 bombers during WWII.
In 1947, Maxine married William Bohl and the couple moved to Sioux Falls, SD, where she obtained her Masters Teaching Degree from Augustana College in Sioux Falls. She taught in the Sioux Falls school system for 27 years. She was a member of Hayti Lutheran Church. She and William owned many race horses throughout Nebraska and Wyoming. After retiring, the couple moved to Hayti, SD. After William passed away, Maxine continued to live in Hayti. She later moved to the Castlewood Assisted Living Center and then to the Estelline Nursing Care Center. Maxine is survived by her nephews, Doug and Mike Avery of Omaha, NE, Stuart (Corby) Shelsta of Hayti, SD, and Scott (Kay) Shelsta of Alexandria, VA and her niece, Barbara Waldowski of Irvine, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband, William; her parents; one brother, Clayton; and one sister, Lois.
