What To Do
Michael Alan “Grizz” Hoverstadt, age 57, of Florence, SD, passed away on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. There will be an open-house visitation to celebrate Grizz’s life from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown, SD. There will be a private family committal service officiated by Rev. Janet Miller at Helgen Cemetery in rural Florence. Military Honors will be performed by the South Dakota Army National Guard Funeral Honors Team.
Michael Alan “Grizz” Hoverstadt was born on March 31, 1961 in Crookston, MN to Albert and Hazel (Mumm) Hoverstadt. He graduated from Waubay High School in 1980. After high school, he joined the SD Army National Guard in Webster, SD and was a small arms repairman. He worked various jobs before moving to Washington State, where he lived for several years. In the 1990’s, Grizz enrolled at Lake Area Technical Institute where he graduated with an automechanic degree.
Grizz was involved in various historic rendezvous, reenactments, and black powder shoots. Grizz was an avid hunter and fisherman, and will be remembered by his family for his love of the outdoors. Grizz’s final act of kindness was to give the generous gift of life through organ and tissue donation.
Grizz is survived by his sisters: Rosemary Hoverstadt, of Watertown, Darlene (Dan) Meyer, of Florence, and Mary (Merle) Lewandowski, of Bryant; his brothers: Russell (Vickie) Hoverstadt, of Wallace, and Darrell (Jolene) Hoverstadt of Mellette. Grizz is also survived by three nieces and five nephews.
Grizz was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Hazel, and his grandparents.
