Bob was born January 21, 1926, in Huron, SD, to Joseph and Verda (Dempster) Bushong. He attended school in Huron and would have graduated from Huron High School in 1945, however in 1944 he joined the Navy to serve his country during the latter part of WWII.
On November 28, 1946, Bob married his high school sweetheart, Beryl Snow in Huron, SD. They resided in Huron until 1976 where they raised their 5 children. He received his GED and went on to attend the University of Minnesota where he obtained a funeral directors license. However, this was not destined to be his career. He then worked for the railroad and later became an employee of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation as a surveyor. In 1976, he and Beryl moved to the Black Hills where he managed several dams until his retirement in 1988. They attended Rimrock Church, grew in their faith and made precious memories. In 2010 they left many life-long friends and moved back to eastern SD to be near family. After losing Beryl to Alzheimer’s in 2015, Bob moved to Maple Place in Watertown where he made many new friends in the last years of his life. He spent as much time as he could with his children and grandkids.
Bob loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, swimming, boating and gardening. He liked animals and admired old cars. He attended many auctions accumulating antique furniture and restoring them. Most important was the love he had for his family. Bob had a strong faith and was always “full of mirth”. He was a witty man with a good sense of humor.
Bob is survived by his children: Robert (Nancy) Bushong of Victor, ID, Bruce (Susie) Bushong of Victor, ID, Beth (Dave) Schlosser of Watertown, SD, Diane (Lyle) Chenoweth of Watertown, SD, and William (Tanya) Bushong of Faith, SD; nine grandchildren: Lorna, Joe, Alexia, Brian, Melanie, Thad, Gereth, Treyton and Gabe; and ten great-grandchildren.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Beryl; his parents, Joe and Verda; his step-father, Winston Oerlline; and his brother, Joe.
