Ruby C. Phillips, age 98, of Watertown, SD, formerly of Hayti, SD, passed away on Monday, October 21, 2019, at a local care center. She was the widow of Theodore "Ted" Phillips. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 25, 2019, at the Hayti Lutheran Church in Hayti. Rev. Randy Eisenbeisz will officiate. Music will be provided by Lori Kent as organist with Paige Fiebelkorn and Kari Anderson as vocalists. The family is requested to meet at the church by 1:30 p.m. for a family prayer service.

Burial will be at West Norden Cemetery, rural Hayti, SD. Honorary pallbearers will be Ruby's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be Pete Hogstad, Tony Hogstad, Joe Fischer, Lane Hogstad, Randy Kluksdahl and Dustin Phillips.

Ruby was born on April 15, 1921 in Driscoll, ND, to Alfred and Jennie (Kluksdahl) Hogstad. Ruby was baptized at the Lutheran Church in Driscoll. The family moved to a farm by Steele, ND in 1924, where she attended country school there. In 1934 the family moved to a farm near Hastings. Ruby graduated from Hastings High School in 1938. She then attended one year of college at Northern State Teacher College in Aberdeen, SD, receiving a certificate to teach in rural schools, where she taught for six years.

On October 7, 1949, Ruby was united in marriage to Theodore "Ted" Phillips in Florence, SD. The couple made their home in Hayti, SD. She was a full time homemaker until 1959, when she became a part time secretary for the Hayti Lutheran Parish.

In 1969 Ruth began working at the Hamlin County ASCS as a clerk, retiring in June of 1983. Ruby taught Sunday School and Bible School and was very active in circle and WELCA. Ruby loved her flowers in her gardens and loved preparing meals for her family and friends. Her grandchildren loved her delicious sugar cookies with milk in her special little cup. Ruby collected birds and enjoyed watching them with Ted by their kitchen window.

Ruby is survived by her two sons, Randy (Karen) Phillips and Danny Phillips, both of Watertown, SD; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Genevieve Hogstad; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted; her parents; three brothers; and two sisters.
